Jones Nets First Professional Goal as Tranmere Fall to Cambridge

Dylan Jones scores his first professional goal for Tranmere Rovers in a League Two clash against Cambridge United, despite a 4-2 defeat. The Norwich City loanee reflects on his milestone.

Dylan Jones, a promising young striker on loan from Norwich City, marked a significant milestone in his career by scoring his first professional goal during a League Two match against Cambridge United on Saturday. The 21-year-old forward, currently with Tranmere Rovers for a half-season, found the net with a well-timed header, giving his team an early lead.

Having joined Norwich from non-league Plymouth Parkway just a year ago, Jones has made remarkable strides, particularly following his performances with Norwich’s development squad. His goal came after a frustrating league debut the previous week, where an earlier effort was disallowed. Although Tranmere ultimately succumbed to a 4-2 defeat, Jones's performance is expected to enhance his confidence as he moves forward. Reflecting on this achievement, Jones expressed his excitement in an interview with Tranmere’s official YouTube channel, stating, “Buzzing to get the first goal and hopefully the first of many. It was everything we had been working on during the week, but it doesn’t really matter now with the result. I came here to score goals and contribute to the team, and hopefully I have done that in this game. I just want to bring this confidence into the next games.”

Aware of the interest from Norwich, Jones noted, “I know a few of the Norwich coaches were watching me in the crowd. I will be speaking to them on a daily basis, but no targets. Nothing specific. No pressure. They just want me to do my thing and score goals.” Read more about Sargent Targets Toronto Move as Norwich Future Uncertain.

Reflecting on his journey into professional football, Jones shared, “I was just playing for fun, scoring goals, and I didn’t really think it could lead to this. But I am trying to approach it the same way, enjoy it, and where it takes me, it takes me. I’ve settled in really well with the lads, and I think it is only a matter of time before it clicks.”

The support and guidance from Tranmere’s manager, Andy Crosby, have been instrumental in Jones's development. He expressed gratitude for the opportunity to play at Prenton Park, saying, “Norwich think I am ready for the step, ready for League Two football, and I needed the loan to get myself some men’s football and some experience. Tranmere is the perfect place.”

As he aims to make the most of his time at Tranmere, Jones has set personal goals to gain as much playing time as possible and help the team achieve its objectives. “I know what the team are striving to achieve, and if I can do what I know I can do, I will definitely contribute to the team. I think the play-offs are possible if we can string some results together,” he explained.

With a contract at Carrow Road running until 2027, along with an option for an additional year, Jones's future looks bright. After gaining experience in senior football last season, he is now eager to further establish himself at Tranmere and continue his development in the professional game.
