Ali Ahmed's Seamless Transition to Norwich
Adapting to a new club midway through the season is rarely easy, but Ali Ahmed has made the transition look seamless. This should come as little surprise given the winding route he took as a teenager, rejecting a deal with his hometown club Toronto before setting off across Europe in pursuit of a career in football. Travelling without an agent, Ahmed joined Os Belenenses under-19 side in Portugal before discovering he was ineligible to play until the age of 18. After a move to Spain and a brief return to Canada, he continued his journey with trials in Portugal, the Netherlands, and England.
When auditions in the non-league game with Enfield Town, Cheshunt, and Tooting & Mitcham failed to lead anywhere, it would have been easy for the winger to lose faith in his ambitions. However, Ahmed's youth coach, who set up the initial Portuguese move, knew somebody at Vancouver Whitecaps FC, and the rest is history.
Impressive Early Contributions at Carrow Road
Ahmed joined Norwich in January and registered seven goal contributions in 19 games. His return of 22 goal contributions in 102 appearances for a Canadian outfit earned him a £1.4m January switch across the Atlantic to Carrow Road, where he wasted little time adapting to the demands of Championship football. Given the MLS season had finished only a month earlier, a campaign in which Ahmed featured 39 times, Philippe Clement could have been forgiven for easing him in. Yet, after a watching brief in the FA Cup third-round victory over Walsall, the 25-year-old was thrown straight into the starting XI away at Wrexham the following week.
Ahmed needed just nine minutes to register his first Norwich assist, picking out Anis Ben Slimane to put City in front against the Hollywood-backed outfit. A strike against the crossbar and an energetic display full of attacking intent followed before he was withdrawn at the interval.
His first goal in England's second tier came a few days later, as he netted Norwich's second in a 5-0 demolition of West Brom at The Hawthorns, before introducing himself to the home faithful with a goal and an assist against Frank Lampard's league leaders Coventry in the next outing. Future Prospects for Ahmed in Championship
While Clement was keen to manage Ahmed's fitness, injuries in the wide areas began to take their toll, forcing the Norwich boss to rely on his new signing. The early productivity began to taper off, with his next goal not coming until over a month later against lowly Leicester, as the wide man continued to adjust to the physical demands of the Championship.
Data shows he is already surpassing Championship wingers with over 1,300 minutes last term in several key metrics, most notably defensive actions. The Canadian winger also outperformed his underlying numbers for both goals and assists, scoring four and providing three assists across 19 league matches.
Ahmed is likely to need rest this summer, with an international call-up anticipated ahead of next month's home World Cup for Canada. Upon his return to Colney, the focus will shift to continued physical and tactical development as he looks to build consistency in what is expected to be a top-eight push.
Onel Hernandez provides a useful reference point, having taken time to settle in England before registering 19 goal contributions in his first full season as City romped to the title, a pathway Ahmed will hope to mirror.
