Angus Gunn is weighing the possibility of an early departure from Nottingham Forest as he grapples with limited playing time. The goalkeeper, who previously donned the yellow and green of Norwich City, made the move to the Premier League side after leaving his childhood club. However, he has found himself firmly on the bench, behind Matz Sels in the pecking order for the number one spot.
With the January transfer window approaching, Gunn is evaluating his options, particularly as his only competitive action this season has come with the Scotland national team. He expressed his disappointment regarding the lack of game time at Forest, stating, “I went into a situation at the club where I thought I'd be getting, obviously not regular game time, but some game time in terms of cups and things like that. It's not really materialised, which I'm disappointed about. But obviously I've still got the chance to come away here and get the opportunity to play, like in the last two games.”
Gunn's recent performances for Scotland have provided a glimmer of hope for his career trajectory. He played a crucial role in a goalless draw against Denmark and contributed to a convincing 2-0 victory over Belarus. “It is a positive for me that the camps aren't too far apart. It was not that long ago when we had those two games and I felt good,” he remarked, emphasising the importance of maintaining momentum.
Reflecting on his international outings, Gunn expressed satisfaction with his form, saying, “I wouldn't say comfortable but I was happy with my performances and I just want to take the confidence from that into this camp and, hopefully, go again.” He acknowledged the solid efforts of his defence while also feeling assured in his own contributions. “I was comfortable in everything I did and I was confident, and those two games gave me even more confidence,” he added.
As Gunn considers his future, the uncertainty surrounding his club situation looms large. With veteran keeper Craig Gordon making a return to the Scotland setup, competition for places is intensifying. Nevertheless, Gunn's primary focus remains on his international duties as he aims to build on his recent form and solidify his position ahead of next summer's World Cup in the United States. “So I think, just take it game by game and try and build on that really,” he concluded.
