Angus Gunn has emerged with renewed determination following a tumultuous summer, showcasing his resilience with a standout performance for Scotland in their recent goalless draw against Denmark. The 28-year-old goalkeeper, who began his professional journey at Norwich City, faced considerable uncertainty after the club opted not to extend his contract at the end of last season. This decision was part of a broader restructuring of Norwich’s goalkeeping department, which saw the arrivals of Vladan Kovacevic, Dan Grimshaw, and Louie Moulden.

Gunn's pre-season was further complicated by an ankle injury sustained while representing his country, a setback that could have derailed his preparations. However, he chose to remain in England, signing a short-term contract with Nottingham Forest in the Premier League. Although his role has primarily been that of a backup, the opportunity to represent Scotland has allowed him to contribute meaningfully as the team pursues qualification for the upcoming World Cup in the USA. Reflecting on the challenges of the summer, Gunn remarked, "It’s been interesting... It was a long summer for me. It definitely wasn’t a great experience. It’s been a difficult time all round knowing that I was out of contract going into that game and then picking the injury up. Thankfully, it was nothing too serious. I had to have a lot of patience." Despite receiving various offers from overseas clubs, Gunn expressed a strong preference to remain in England. "I listened to different offers and, to be honest, I was sitting there not really knowing what was going to happen. Obviously, the Forest thing came up and it was a chance to stay in England. It’s only a short-term thing, but coming away with the national team gives me a good chance to get games in. I just wanted to come out confident and hopefully stamp my authority on the position."

His recent display in Copenhagen highlighted his readiness and resolve, as he made several critical saves to help Scotland secure an important point in their qualification campaign. Gunn’s experience training alongside elite players at Nottingham Forest has kept him sharp and focused. He stated, "I’ve had a lot of experiences in the past and I’ve learned from that. I feel like that’s definitely kept me sharp."

Acknowledging the initial hurdles he encountered upon joining Forest, Gunn shared his satisfaction with his recent progress: "Going to Forest, I was probably a little bit behind. It was probably a week before the season began that I went in there. In the last few weeks, I’ve been working really hard with the goalkeeping coach. I feel really good."

Proud of his contribution against Denmark, Gunn concluded, "Other than picking the three points up, it couldn’t have gone any better." His journey underscores the resilience and adaptability required to succeed in the high-stakes environment of professional football.
