Jacob Wright embraces versatile midfield role
Jacob Wright has adapted to a more advanced midfield position under Philippe Clement since joining Norwich City permanently last November. Initially impressing in a deeper role during his loan from Manchester City, Wright was shifted higher up the pitch behind the striker, with Clement favouring a midfield pairing of Pelle Mattsson and Kenny McLean alongside him.
Wright admits the new role was a steep learning curve but one he grew to enjoy. "I'd played there a little bit, but it was pretty new to me. I was definitely learning on the job, but it was a position that I really enjoyed," he said. "I think towards the end, when I got to grips and became more comfortable with it, I definitely enjoyed it a lot more and started to cherish playing in that position."
The 20-year-old is confident he can influence games whether playing deeper or further forward. "I don't really have a preference. I think I can influence games playing higher, and I think I can dictate games playing deeper," Wright added. "Wherever the manager sees me as a best fit, that's where I'll play, and I'll do my best for the team."
Wright faces strong competition for midfield places from Mattsson, McLean, Sam Field, Liam Gibbs and Mirko Topic, as well as Paris Maghoma, Anis Ben Slimane and Oscar Schwartau for the number 10 role. He welcomes the challenge, saying: "Competition is part of football. It comes with the territory and I'm embracing that. It's a challenge that I came here for, to come and compete for game time."
Norwich could profit from Gabriel Sara sale to Aston Villa
Norwich City stand to receive a financial boost if Gabriel Sara completes a reported transfer to Aston Villa this summer. Sara, who left Norwich in 2024 for Galatasaray, is reportedly attracting a £25.5 million offer from the Premier League club, according to Football League World, The72, Football League World, Football League World, The Pink'un.
Sara joined Norwich from São Paulo in 2022 and made 86 Championship appearances, scoring 20 goals and providing 16 assists. He helped the Canaries reach the 2024 play-offs before moving to Turkey, where he has won two Süper Lig titles with Galatasaray.
Norwich reportedly included a sell-on clause in the original deal, which could see them earn between £1 million and £5 million depending on the percentage applied to the profit or total fee. The exact terms remain undisclosed.
The 27-year-old winger has also gained European experience, featuring in both the Europa League and Champions League, which may appeal to Aston Villa as they prepare for Champions League football under Unai Emery. Sara is contracted to Galatasaray until 2029 but could return to English football if the clubs agree terms.
Norwich target Lawrence Agyekum amid transfer interest
Norwich City are reportedly interested in signing Lawrence Agyekum from Cercle Brugge this summer, with the Belgian club open to offers for the Ghanaian midfielder, according to Football League World, The72, Football League World, Football League World, The Pink'un.
The 22-year-old joined Cercle Brugge permanently last summer after an initial loan from RB Salzburg. He has made 62 appearances in the Belgian Pro League, contributing two goals and four assists, and is valued for his versatility, having played across the right flank and in midfield.
Norwich face competition from Rapid Wien, who could bring Agyekum back to the Austrian Bundesliga. No formal offers have been made yet, but both clubs have enquired about his availability.
Potential impact at Carrow Road
Agyekum’s ability to cover multiple positions and his youth make him an attractive option for Norwich as they prepare for the 2026/27 Championship season. His experience adapting to moves from Ghana to Austria and Belgium could ease his transition to English football.
Philippe Clement’s squad already includes new signing Sam Field and loanee Bruno Alves, but Agyekum could add depth and flexibility to the midfield and right flank, helping cover for injuries or suspensions throughout the campaign.
