Renecke Seals Hammarby Move After Copenhagen Stint

Waylon Renecke has joined Hammarby IF on a long-term deal, ending his time with FC Copenhagen. The former Norwich City defender aims to make an impact in Sweden.

Former Norwich City youngster Waylon Renecke is embarking on a new chapter in Scandinavian football after joining Swedish top-flight side Hammarby IF.

The 20-year-old defender has signed a contract until 2030 with the Allsvenskan club, bringing an end to his two-year spell with Danish giants FC Copenhagen.

Renecke's Journey Through Football

Renecke, who has represented both England and South Africa at youth level, spent five years at Carrow Road after joining Norwich from Peterborough United at the age of 13.

He progressed through the Canaries academy system and was named among the substitutes for a 3-0 Championship win at Stoke City in March 2024 before departing for Denmark a few months later.

Since moving to the Danish capital, Renecke has continued his development with loan spells at Swedish side rgryte and Danish outfit Esbjerg. However, after being unable to force his way into FC Copenhagen's first team, the South African has opted to begin the next step of his career with Hammarby.

Excitement for New Beginnings

"The feeling is really good. I'm really, really excited to get started and join this amazing club, and I can't wait to get going," the defender told club channels.

Renecke expressed his enthusiasm for the club's fanbase, stating, "The first thing that popped into my head was the fans and the atmosphere at the 3Arena. For me, that was a huge positive about the club, and I'm looking forward to playing in front of the fans."

Hammarby's sporting director, Mikael Hjelmberg, added, "We see great potential in Waylon, who will contribute with increased competition in the back line directly." He emphasized the club's confidence in Renecke's development.

Hammarby currently sits second in the Allsvenskan after 12 games of the new season, with Renecke set to join up with his new teammates straight away. He is still awaiting the completion of his work and residence permit, although the opening of the Swedish transfer window is expected to help speed up the process.
