Andrew Omobamidele Reflects on His Journey at Norwich City
Almost three years on from his Norwich City exit, Andrew Omobamidele has reflected on his time at Carrow Road. The defender spent five years in Norfolk after joining from Irish side Leixlip United in 2018 and signing an academy scholarship with the Canaries before progressing through the youth ranks into the first team.
From Debut to Injury
His debut came in January 2021 when he replaced Emi Buendia late on in a 2-1 away victory against Cardiff City, before making his first start in April during a 1-1 draw with Preston North End at Deepdale, where he earned the Man of the Match award. Following a whirlwind few months in which he became a Championship title winner and made his international debut, Omobamidele capped it off with a Premier League debut against Arsenal at the Emirates under Daniel Farke.
Omobamidele shared, "When I look back, it all happened within a few months of each other. I was ready mentally for that. I've always envisaged that for myself, even when I first went over to England." However, his journey took a difficult turn when he suffered a stress fracture during a match against Tottenham Hotspur, which kept him out for about nine or ten months.
Support from Adam Idah
During that difficult period, Omobamidele was grateful for the support of his teammates, particularly his countryman Adam Idah. He recalled, "Adam Idah was there with me, and I was close with Adam, so he helped me a lot." After returning from injury, he marked his comeback by starting the opening game of the new season away at Cardiff City.
Reflecting on his experiences, Omobamidele stated, "When I think back now, it was a crazy period for me. Everything was moving quickly, and you don't really have time in the moment to understand or realise what you are doing or what sort of levels you are hitting; you just have to keep going." His journey continues as he aims to make an impact at his current club, RC Strasbourg, and push for a return to the national team setup.
