Clement Discusses Yongwa's Ambitious Move
Philippe Clement believes Darlin Yongwa's decision to join Norwich City is a sign of the club's growing ambition.
The 25-year-old completed a free transfer to Carrow Road last week, with City beating off significant competition from Spain, France, and Turkey to land the Cameroon international and conclude their lengthy pursuit of a left-back.
Yongwa's Experience Boosts Norwich's Defense
Yongwa brings extensive experience of France's top flight and was sold on City's project following conversations with Clement, sporting director Ben Knapper, and his deputy, Lee Dunn.
Clement believes the club's ability to attract a player of Yongwa's profile, despite interest elsewhere, is evidence that they are moving in the right direction.
He noted, "It's a player, he's 25 now, who has experience in several seasons playing senior football. Also, I think three years in Ligue 1. Also, 17 selections for the national team of Cameroon, which is a strong country in Africa."
Yongwa's Fitness and Future at Norwich
Yongwa was not involved in City's competitive opener against MK Dons, watching from the stands as his new club impressed in the Carabao Cup.
Clement has been encouraged by the left-back's fitness following a summer of individual training, but says he will need time to make up for the lack of a full pre-season and match action.
He stated, "There's a disadvantage. He was out of contract, so he didn't make a pre-season with the team. So, he did it individually." Clement added that Yongwa's recent VO2 max test results were decent, indicating he has worked hard individually.
