Iwan Roberts Hails Kenny McLean as Norwich City's Heartbeat

Ex-Norwich City player Iwan Roberts praises Kenny McLean for his leadership and essential role in the team ahead of the Cardiff City match.

Ex-Norwich City star Iwan Roberts has expressed that Kenny McLean is the heartbeat of the Canaries, highlighting the midfielder's vital role in the team. The 32-year-old, who joined Norwich in 2018, has been a consistent presence in the starting lineup, starting all 12 matches for the club this season and captaining the side in the absence of Grant Hanley.

Roberts has emphasised McLean's leadership qualities, stating, "I think McLean is your heartbeat. He’s been here six years or so now, he bleeds yellow and green. He’s captain for a reason, he’s a leader, he’s vocal on the pitch." His remarks, reported by Inside Futbol, underscore the importance of McLean's contributions, particularly in terms of his on-the-ball skills, which he believes are underappreciated.

The midfielder's recent red card against Middlesbrough means he will miss the upcoming match against Cardiff City, a situation that Roberts believes will leave a significant gap in the team. "I don’t think he gets the credit he deserves for his ability on the ball, not just his hard work off the ball when they’re out of possession, but I think his leadership qualities are maybe what we haven’t got when he’s not in the team, and it’s a big hole to miss as he serves out his suspension," Roberts added.

As Norwich City prepares to face Cardiff City this weekend, it remains to be seen how head coach Johannes Hoff Thorup will adjust his midfield in McLean's absence.
