Norwich City midfielder AJ Bridge is celebrating a significant milestone in his career after netting his first senior goal while on loan at Cork City. The 21-year-old made a notable impact off the bench, helping Cork secure an impressive 4-1 victory over Athlone Town on Friday evening. This achievement comes during only his fourth appearance for the League of Ireland First Division leaders, marking a crucial step in his development.
Cork City are eager to return to the top tier after suffering relegation last season, and Bridge's goal highlights the potential they see in the young player. His move to the Irish league was strategically planned to enhance his skills, particularly in off-the-ball situations, as he aims to further his career at Norwich following his transfer from Championship rivals Middlesbrough in August 2024. Reflecting on his goal, Bridge expressed his emotions candidly. "As soon as Hans (Mpongo) got it, I just thought make that run, and then I didn't even look, as I thought the defender was going to come and slide, so I hit it first time," he said. He added, "Luckily, it went in at the back post. It was a big relief coming on and getting more minutes, which is good for my experience and chipping in with a goal. The family were watching on the telly as well, so I gave them a little thumbs up, so that should be good."
Bridge’s journey into senior football follows two years spent honing his craft within Norwich's youth system, where he developed his technical abilities. Eager to embrace the challenges of men's football, he remarked, "I think coming here and experiencing men's football and just making the most of it, soaking in off the experienced players, Seani (Maguire) and stuff, who've played at a top level. I'm learning loads of little things I think I need to be better at." Read more about Jones Signs New Deal as Norwich Secure Striker's Future.
He also acknowledged the differences between academy football and the senior game, particularly regarding positioning and tactical awareness. "I'm good technically, but academy football is not really the out-of-possession side. I'm learning that more here, like second balls and where to be off throw-ins and little tiny details like that I think are improving my game. I think that's only better for me because that just makes me a better player."
With his first senior goal now under his belt, Bridge is determined to continue making a significant impact at Cork City, with aspirations of returning to Carrow Road as a more rounded and capable player.
