Schwartau targets number 10 role
Oscar Schwartau is keen to establish himself as Norwich City's permanent number 10. The 20-year-old, now entering his third season at Carrow Road, has shown versatility but wants to make the attacking midfield position his home.
Since joining from Brondby in August 2024 for an initial £2m, Schwartau has made 80 appearances across two seasons, mostly playing on the left wing. He told The Pink'un, "I feel good out on the left wing, but also I want to try the number 10 position because I feel like I can give a lot more to the team in there, but in the end I'll play wherever the gaffer wants me."
Competition with Ben Slimane and Maghoma
Schwartau faces competition for the number 10 spot from Anis Ben Slimane and Paris Maghoma. He acknowledges the challenge but welcomes it as healthy for the squad.
Healthy squad competition
"Yeah, some good competition, I would say. We have a very good squad now, so in every position it's a hard position to play," Schwartau said. "I would say it's healthy competition in the team, which is very good."
With the attacking midfield roles contested, Schwartau will need to push hard in training and matches to secure a regular starting place behind the striker.
Strong Carabao Cup start boosts confidence
Schwartau started on the left wing in Norwich's Carabao Cup win over MK Dons last weekend, a match that showcased the fluidity of City's attacking quartet. The victory has given the squad momentum ahead of the Championship opener against West Brom.
Reflecting on the win, Schwartau said, "It felt very good. Great start to the game when Mo (Toure) decides to score inside the first 40 seconds, so yeah, just a great win, and it gives us good momentum to build on."
He added, "It's very exciting, and I'm really looking forward to it (the West Brom game), and we need the three points and get the good start, so I'm really looking forward to it."
