Toure Targets World Cup Spot After Stunning Norwich Start

Mohamed Toure's ascent in the footballing world has been remarkable. Toure’s career has taken him through several clubs, including a stint in France with Reims and Paris FC, followed by a spell in Denmark at Randers FC. His recent transfer to Norwich City in January has proven to be a pivotal moment. Since joining the Canaries, Toure has quickly made his mark, netting an impressive 10 goals and providing three assists in just 12 appearances. His scoring rate is exceptional, contributing to a goal every 48 minutes on the pitch, having played a total of 624 minutes.

Australia's head coach, Tony Popovic, is closely monitoring Toure’s progress as the team prepares for the World Cup next month. However, Toure remains focused on securing a starting position for Australia's opening match against Turkey. “I still wake up sometimes and pinch myself,” Toure shared in an interview with 7News Adelaide. “Heading to the World Cup, I’m trying to cement my position in the team. I’m taking it day by day, but it is surreal, and it is a great feeling.”

Norwich City secured Toure's signing after their pursuit of Bodo/Glimt striker Kasper Høgh fell through, and he has certainly exceeded expectations. “It’s actually been crazy; it’s wild as well, nothing I expected,” Toure admitted. “Of course, I always expected to progress in my game and get better, but I feel like the leaps have surprised both a lot of people and me.”

Last season, Toure was one of 13 Australians competing in the Championship, alongside his close friend, Nestory Irankunda. Irankunda, who moved to Watford from Bayern Munich, had an impressive debut season, making 40 appearances and attracting interest from clubs such as Bayer Leverkusen, Everton, and Crystal Palace. As they prepare for the World Cup, Irankunda has been training alongside Toure in Adelaide. Following Toure’s standout performance during Norwich’s 3-1 FA Cup victory over West Brom while Irankunda was serving a suspension, he praised his friend's early success in England. “I’m going to start calling him Mr Headlines from now on,” Irankunda remarked. “Because I think he’s the quickest player to reach 10 goals for his club, and it’s a super proud moment.”
