Anis Ben Slimane is resolute in his pursuit of World Cup selection, recognising that earning the trust of Norwich City head coach Philippe Clement is crucial to achieving his ambitions. The 24-year-old midfielder recently made a significant return to action, starting his first match in nearly four months during Norwich's Boxing Day victory against Charlton Athletic.
Although he was substituted at half-time, Slimane's comeback marks a pivotal moment following a lengthy recovery from a quad injury that had kept him sidelined. Clement has acknowledged the challenges players face in regaining their rhythm after such an extended absence, yet Slimane remains focused and determined in his efforts. Reflecting on his arduous journey back to fitness, Slimane shared, “I’m feeling really good, both physically and mentally. Of course, when you have been out for a long period, and when you first get injured, you don’t see the lights at the end of the tunnel. To be where I am after a lot of really hard work and a lot of people who have helped me, I’m feeling good right now.”
The attacking midfielder expressed his joy at rejoining his teammates in training, stating, “It was the best feeling to be back out training with the team. That’s what we do, that’s what I love to do. I love to play football and to get out on the pitch and train with the team. That was a really, really good feeling.”
With the World Cup on the horizon, Slimane is acutely aware of the opportunity that awaits him. Tunisia faces a challenging group in the tournament, featuring formidable opponents such as the Netherlands and Japan. He is committed to securing a spot in the national squad, explaining, “My motivation was to get back fit and ready for the minutes I’m going to get, and also I know there is a World Cup coming up in the summer. To do that I have to perform for the club. There is a new head coach who hasn’t really watched me a lot. My motivation was just to get back as soon as possible.” Read more about Jeffery Departs as Norwich Seek New Commercial Director.
As he aims to build on his recent return, Slimane has set clear objectives for himself: “My goal, first of all, is to try my best to stay injury-free and to get into the team to get some minutes now. I know I just came back from injury, so I have to build it up slowly. But my goal in the new year is to try and build it up and to get minutes on the pitch. But to do that I know I need to train well.”
Slimane’s determination to overcome recent challenges is evident, and Norwich City supporters will undoubtedly be eager to see more of the talented midfielder as he continues his recovery and strives towards fulfilling his World Cup aspirations.
