Clement Reassures on McLean's Fitness Ahead of World Cup

Philippe Clement has eased concerns over Kenny McLean's fitness, confirming the midfielder will miss Norwich's final Championship match but is on track for the World Cup.

Philippe Clement has moved quickly to allay concerns regarding Kenny McLean’s fitness as the World Cup draws near, despite the midfielder missing Norwich City’s final Championship match against Hull City due to back issues.

McLean has been a standout performer for the Canaries this season, playing a pivotal role in Scotland's qualification for the World Cup with a stunning long-range goal against Denmark in November 2025. This marked Scotland's first return to the tournament since 1998, making his absence all the more significant as Norwich prepares to face Hull City without their influential captain. During a press briefing at Colney on Friday, Clement confirmed that McLean has "blocked his back," and will not be risked for the upcoming trip. “I want to reassure all my Scottish friends that it's not a big problem,” he stated. “He will be out for a few days to unblock it, and he will be ready for the World Cup, but he will not be able to come to help, because sitting four or five hours in the bus or in a car is not a good thing for him." Clement indicated that McLean is expected to rejoin the squad for a 10-day training camp following a week off, suggesting that the midfielder’s recovery is on track.

Looking ahead to the match against Hull, Clement hinted at potential changes to the lineup as he aims to assess other players in preparation for the next season. “I need to see also maybe to see some other players to start with them, to see them towards next season, but only the ones who have shown that they are ready for that,” he elaborated.

Despite the setback, Clement took the opportunity to praise McLean’s leadership qualities. “Kenny, I praised him already a lot, I think, the last weeks and months, and he deserves that also fully. He is by far one of the best captains that I had as player and as manager until now,” he remarked, highlighting the midfielder's influence both on and off the pitch.

Clement further reflected on the character McLean brings to the dressing room: “A leader by example for what he shows on the pitch, and off the pitch, but also in the dressing room, the way he talks, the way he behaves, the way he helps with this young group.” He expressed regret over not having the opportunity to work with McLean sooner, adding, “It's a pity that in the past we didn't succeed to get him first faster together in another club, because he's a really good captain.”

As Norwich City prepares for their final game of the season, the focus remains firmly on ensuring McLean is fit and ready to make an impact at the World Cup, underscoring the importance of strong leadership as the Canaries look towards the future.
