Norwich City have announced the promotion of Declan Rudd to head goalkeeping coach, a decision that head coach Philippe Clement describes as both logical and beneficial for the squad. This appointment follows the departure of Tony Roberts, who has opted to pursue new opportunities.
Rudd’s journey with Norwich City began in the club’s academy, and his transition from player to coach brings a sense of continuity that Clement believes will be advantageous as the team undergoes a period of change. Read more about Norwich Target Victory as Watford Seek Redemption.
“It’s never an easy decision. First, Tony's decision was made before I came, so I knew that situation already that Tony was going to leave and he had another option that he'd chosen,” Clement explained. “We were looking for solutions and we talked with Tony about that. I have to say I'm really grateful for Tony in these two weeks together. The way he was engaged also in the story and how motivated he was to help with everything.” Read more about Clement Targets Revenge as Derby Kick-Off Rescheduled.
Clement's confidence in Rudd is reinforced by Roberts’ high praise for the former goalkeeper. “He spoke really highly of Declan. We had a few talks with Declan also about philosophy and the way of working. I think it's also good that he knows the club. He knows the goalkeepers also. So I think it's a logical step,” Clement remarked. Read more about Clement Backs Makama to Unlock Full Potential at Norwich.
Rudd’s deep-rooted knowledge of Norwich City is seen as a significant asset. Clement has historically valued such familiarity when assembling his coaching teams, as demonstrated during his tenure at Rangers when he appointed Alex Rae to strengthen team connections. “We need to build a family together, so you need to know all the members of the family as fast as possible,” Clement stated. “With people like Declan, this can help. He knows what this club is about and the history of the club. It’s also important for a group of players, like now when you have a lot of new players who don’t have the club’s history yet, that there are people on the staff who can explain what this club is about. So Declan has for sure a lot of stories to tell.”
As Clement continues to assess his coaching staff, he confirmed that Ryan Garry and set-piece coach Nick Stanley will remain in their roles. He hinted at potential future appointments, stating, “We're fully assessing everything, together with the owners, with Ben. It's our mission to make it as strong as possible and it's not only about changes now. It can also be in six months or in one year. Everybody has the same ambition, and that's to go to a certain level where we're all aligned about where we want to get with this club. You need the right people in the right place for that, and there will be constant evaluation around those things.”
With Declan Rudd at the helm of the goalkeeping department, Norwich City supporters can look forward to a blend of continuity and innovative strategies as the club aims to strengthen its foundation and pursue future success.
