Norwich City Football Club has officially appointed Declan Rudd as their new first-team goalkeeper coach, marking a significant milestone in his career. Rudd, who has been part of the academy coaching setup since 2022, steps into this role following the resignation of Tony Roberts, who is expected to join another club later this week.
Roberts, who joined Norwich in September 2024 under sporting director Ben Knapper, played a vital role in developing the club’s goalkeeping talent despite a challenging period characterised by managerial changes. His dynamic approach and ability to forge strong relationships with the goalkeepers earned him respect within the club. Knapper acknowledged Roberts’ contributions, stating, "Tony has brought infectious energy and personality to the training centre during his time with us. I know how highly he is valued by our goalkeepers and that they have been very appreciative of his work. He leaves with all of our very best wishes in the next step of his career." Rudd’s connection to Norwich runs deep; he progressed through the youth ranks and made his senior debut in September 2009, amassing 34 appearances, including a stint in the Premier League, before moving to Preston North End. His comprehensive understanding of the club’s ethos, combined with his existing rapport with both staff and players, positions him as an ideal successor to Roberts. In his new role, Rudd will work closely with current goalkeepers Vladan Kovacevic, Daniel Grimshaw, and Louie Moulden. Knapper expressed confidence in Rudd's abilities, remarking, "In promoting Declan to the first team, we have someone who knows the club and how we operate. He absolutely deserves this opportunity - he is ready to make this step up and everyone within the first team is looking forward to working closely with him moving forwards."
With Rudd now in a pivotal position within the first team, Norwich City supporters are eager to see how his extensive experience and insights will influence the goalkeeping department as the club aims to build a solid foundation for the upcoming season.
