Redmond Reflects on Norwich City Impact a Decade On

Nathan Redmond looks back on his formative years at Norwich City, highlighting key moments and personal growth during his time at Carrow Road.

Nathan Redmond Reflects on Norwich City

Nathan Redmond remains grateful to this day for the role Norwich City played in shaping both his career and his personal development. Now 32, the winger signed for the Canaries in the summer of 2013 in a deal reportedly worth up to £3.2 million from his boyhood club Birmingham City.

He went on to make 123 appearances across three seasons at Carrow Road before departing for Southampton following Norwich's relegation from the Premier League. A decade on from his City exit, Redmond still reflects on his time in Norfolk very fondly.

“I got sold for a bag of chips, really. It was two-and-a-half million or something like that. Jack Butland was the same, £3 million to Stoke. Imagine that in today’s market,” he said.

Redmond's Growth in Norfolk

Redmond spoke about his transition to Norwich, highlighting how Chris Hughton, who had previously worked with him at Birmingham, played a significant role in his development. “He understood my background, growing up in Highgate before moving to Kitts Green, Lea Village and Glebe and then making it into the first team,” Redmond explained.

“He recognised that, at that crucial stage in my career, I could do with being that far away from it. Norwich isn’t not multicultural, but Birmingham is so multicultural that it always feels like home.”

Redmond admitted that moving to Norwich helped him mature, both as a person and as a player. “I was still only 18 or 19, leaving home for the first time and doing what everyone does. FaceTiming my mum, asking, ‘How do I cook this?’”

Memorable Moments and Future Aspirations

In May 2015, Redmond etched his name into Norwich City folklore by scoring one of the most iconic goals in the club's modern history in the Championship play-off final. “It’s either the Nacional one (at Birmingham) or the Championship play-off final for Norwich, where I scored. That one’s special,” he recalled.

After spending six years at Southampton, Redmond has since represented Besiktas, Burnley, Sheffield Wednesday, and most recently, Blackburn Rovers. He is now on the lookout for his next challenge in the game.

“I feel good. I think there are loads of different stages in football, aren’t there? And when you get into your 30s, you start thinking about a lot more than just football,” he stated.

Redmond believes he can add value off the pitch as well, helping younger players navigate their careers. “I know what I have to offer, and I think it’s more than just football ability,” he concluded.
