George Long completes Southampton move
Norwich City goalkeeper George Long has completed a permanent transfer to Championship rivals Southampton. The 32-year-old joined the Saints on a free transfer following the mutual termination of his contract at Carrow Road.
Long had spent the latter part of last season on loan at St Mary’s, where he made a single appearance. Despite signing a new three-year deal in October 2024, he was deemed surplus to requirements at Norwich, with Vladan Kovacevic, Dan Grimshaw and Louie Moulden all ahead of him in the pecking order for the upcoming campaign.
Long’s Norwich career in numbers
George Long signed for Norwich from Millwall on a free transfer in August 2023. He made 24 appearances in total for the Canaries, keeping two clean sheets during his time at Carrow Road. Both shutouts came under David Wagner in the 2023/24 season, against QPR in the Championship and Bristol City in the Carabao Cup.
His final game for Norwich was a 5-3 defeat to Portsmouth in April 2025. Long’s time at the club was marked by limited opportunities, with competition for the goalkeeper spot proving strong.
Long’s career journey before Norwich
Before joining Norwich, Long had spells at several clubs including Sheffield United, Oxford United, Motherwell, AFC Wimbledon and Hull City. He also represented England at youth international level.
According to The Pink'un, Long’s move to Southampton marks a return to the Saints following his loan spell last season.
