Notts County are reportedly keen to re-sign former Norwich City goalkeeper Archie Mair as they look to bolster their squad ahead of the new season. According to Football League World, the Magpies are targeting the free agent two years after his influential loan spell at Meadow Lane.
Following a 1-1 draw against Newport County in their opening match of the 2025-26 League Two campaign, County are eager to enhance their goalkeeping options. Jodi Jones equalised for the Magpies with a second-half penalty, marking a promising start under new manager Martin Paterson, who succeeded Stuart Maynard earlier this summer.
Paterson has already added former Derby County keeper Kelle Roos to his ranks but appears determined to inject further experience into his goalkeeping department. Mair, who made a significant impact during his loan at County in the 2022-23 season, could provide the depth they desire. The Scotsman was pivotal in County's promotion campaign, notably saving two penalties in the National League play-off final against Chesterfield, a performance that secured their return to the English Football League (EFL). After his loan at Notts County, Mair spent the 2023-24 season on loan at Gateshead in the National League before moving to Morecambe in League Two. In January 2025, he signed for Motherwell; however, his time at the Scottish club was limited, with just one appearance to his name. Released by Norwich City this summer, Mair is currently available as a free agent and is a strong candidate for a permanent move back to County. However, he faces competition from National League club Hartlepool United. Read more about Diallo Shines in Pre-Season Debut as Norwich Eye Success.
Hartlepool are also interested in acquiring Mair as they prepare for their own season, which kicks off this weekend against Yeovil Town. With only 32-year-old Adam Smith as their first-choice goalkeeper, the Monkey Hangers are looking to introduce new competition. Despite this, it appears that Notts County are in a favourable position to secure Mair’s return.
The transfer window remains active, and County supporters will be watching closely to see if their club can bring back a player who has made a notable impact in their recent history.
