Norwich City Women reinforced their promotion ambitions with an emphatic 5-0 victory over MK Dons, marking a significant step in their pursuit of the top of the table. This commanding performance not only keeps them in close contention with league leaders Fulham but also showcases the attacking prowess that has defined Andy Cook's squad this season.
From the outset, Norwich exerted control over the match, with four of their five goals scored in a dominant first half that thrilled an audience of nearly 400 fans at Carrow Road. Holly Kennard was instrumental in the victory, netting two goals, while contributions from Freya Symonds, Issy Moore, and Tash Snelling highlighted the team’s offensive depth.
The contest began with MK Dons attempting to make an early impact, earning a free kick just outside the Norwich penalty area. However, Molly Lemon’s effort was comfortably saved by City goalkeeper Holly Mears. Moments later, Norwich made their mark. Liv Cook’s dynamic run down the right flank culminated in a perfectly placed cross for Snelling, who executed a precise volley into the top corner.
Norwich quickly doubled their advantage just two minutes later. A long throw from Cook was flicked on by Freya Symonds, allowing Kennard to volley from the edge of the box, igniting celebrations among the home supporters. The Dons struggled to contain Cook's long throws, which consistently disrupted their defensive structure. Kennard nearly added to the tally shortly thereafter, firing over the bar from another threatening delivery.
MK Dons found a brief respite when captain Grace Riglar fouled Cheyanna Morgan. Alex O’Neill’s curling free kick was met with a stunning save from Mears, but the relentless pressure from Norwich continued. After a powerful strike from Cook hit the crossbar, a third goal seemed imminent.
Just before the half-time whistle, Kennard delivered an incisive pass to Snelling, who outpaced defender Amanda Chimbima to slot home, extending the lead to 3-0. MK Dons' goalkeeper, Jamie-Lee Bamford, proved crucial in keeping the scoreline from escalating further, making vital saves from both Symonds and Williams as Norwich sought to extend their lead.
Norwich was awarded a penalty just prior to the break when Cook was brought down by O’Neill after chasing a loose ball. Symonds stepped up and confidently converted from the spot, sending the Canaries into the half-time interval with a commanding 4-0 lead.
The second half saw Norwich maintain their dominance. Hailes set up Kennard for another close-range attempt that struck the woodwork. A well-coordinated move involving Symonds and Kennard nearly resulted in Snelling claiming a hat-trick, though her shot narrowly missed the near post.
With just six minutes remaining, Moore concluded the scoring with a composed finish after being set up by Kennard. This final goal added a touch of brilliance to an already stellar performance.
Norwich City Women will face AFC Sudbury in their next match on October 28, followed by two cup fixtures: one against Northampton Town in the National League Cup and a trip to Stevenage in the FA Cup first round.
