McLean Addresses Sargent's Departure as Canaries Move On

Norwich City captain Kenny McLean reflects on Josh Sargent's impending transfer to Toronto FC, expressing frustration and support as the club looks ahead.

Norwich City’s captain, Kenny McLean, has openly addressed the emotionally charged circumstances surrounding Josh Sargent's impending transfer to Toronto FC. The deal, which could rise from an initial fee of £15.5 million to potentially over £20 million with add-ons, has been a challenging ordeal for everyone at Carrow Road. Sargent, who has not featured for the Canaries since withdrawing from an FA Cup match against Walsall last month, is set to make the switch.

In an interview with BBC Radio Norfolk, McLean acknowledged the frustration felt by the fanbase. He stated, “I get the fans' frustration completely. A couple of months ago, we were talking about having the best player in the Championship, and then we lost him. It's not nice for anybody.” McLean’s bond with Sargent has been particularly strong since the striker’s arrival from Werder Bremen in 2021, making this transition especially poignant for the captain. “I've had my say to the lads, to Josh, and to the club, but I think that matters will stay in-house,” McLean explained. “The way it played out is not nice, but it's resolved now, so we can move on.” He emphasised the difficulties faced in the lead-up to Sargent’s departure, acknowledging the constant questions circulating within the club and the dressing room.

Sargent's time at Norwich has been a rollercoaster, with a tally of 56 goals in 157 matches. However, his recent form has raised concerns, particularly following a promising start to the current season where he netted six goals in just five games. His decision to inform head coach Philippe Clement via text about his choice not to play against Walsall has further complicated matters. Despite the challenges posed by Sargent's exit, McLean has expressed unwavering support for the player and his family, stating, “I've got so much love for Josh and his family, so I'm not going to say anything bad towards him. I’m sure the fans would enjoy it if I did, but it’s a situation that’s played out the way nobody wanted it to.”

With Sargent's move nearing finalisation, Norwich City can now redirect their focus towards upcoming matches. McLean maintains a positive outlook regarding the team's prospects, especially following a strong performance despite a disappointing 2-1 loss to Birmingham City last Saturday. “The fans will be straight behind us against Sheffield Wednesday because they see what we're giving. We're responding to them, they're responding to us, and things are looking up definitely,” he asserted. Read more about Toure Battles in Defeat as Canaries Fall to Birmingham.

As Norwich prepares to host already-relegated Sheffield Wednesday at Carrow Road on Wednesday, the club aims to build on the momentum gained under Clement, who has successfully guided them away from the relegation zone. With the Sargent situation nearing resolution, the Canaries are ready to concentrate on their ambitions of climbing back to the top tier of the Championship.
