Mattsson Targets Playoff Glory as Canaries Soar

Pelle Mattsson outlines Norwich City’s playoff ambitions as they continue their impressive form in the Championship, eyeing crucial victories in the final matches.

Pelle Mattsson has articulated Norwich City’s ambitions as they aim for the top of the Championship. The Canaries are currently enjoying a rich vein of form, having secured 11 victories in their last 15 matches. The 24-year-old midfielder is eager to convert this momentum into tangible results on the pitch.

Mattsson played a pivotal role in Norwich's recent 1-0 victory over Charlton Athletic at The Valley, netting the only goal and helping to keep the team firmly in the playoff race. Despite their impressive run in 2026, which has seen them accumulate more points than any other team in the league, Norwich still finds themselves nine points adrift of the playoff spots with just seven matches remaining. “We have big ambitions, but we're working to the next game as always,” Mattsson stated after the match, highlighting the team's focus on immediate challenges. “Let’s see where that brings us. We all want to be in the playoffs, of course, but we need to show it on the pitch. We're going to show it every game.” Read more about Sara Targets World Cup Spot After Brazil Call-Up.

Under the guidance of manager Philippe Clement, Mattsson has become an essential part of the midfield, forging a strong partnership with team captain Kenny McLean. The young midfielder expressed his gratitude for the mentorship he has received from McLean. “He's a brilliant person, a brilliant player. I learned a lot from Kenny in the few months I've been here,” he said. “I just use my strengths alongside Kenny and try to contribute. He’s a really good lad. Obviously, the skipper. Huge respect for him.”

As the Canaries prepare to face Portsmouth at Carrow Road on Good Friday, Mattsson is also taking advantage of some downtime to enjoy life outside of football. With a few days off, he looks forward to spending quality time with family and friends in Norwich. “Maybe I’ll play a bit of golf—don’t tell the gaffer,” he joked. “I think we’ll stay in Norwich this time.” Read more about Manning Takes Leave as Huddersfield Support Family.

On the international front, Mattsson, who has previously represented Denmark at youth levels, is eager to secure a place in the senior squad. His teammate, Emi Marcondes, recently remarked that had it not been for an ankle injury that sidelined Mattsson for nearly two months, he would have been a strong contender for selection. “Yes, of course. I think it has to be the ambition for every player to play for a national team,” Mattsson acknowledged. “It’s a proud moment to play for a national team, but I’m not really focused on that. If I play well here for Norwich, then hopefully somewhere along the road I’ll be in the national team. But we’ll see.”

As the season enters a critical phase, Norwich City is gearing up for the challenges ahead in their pursuit of a playoff position. With momentum firmly on their side, the Canaries aim to assert their ambitions on the pitch, commencing with their upcoming match against Portsmouth. Mattsson and his teammates are ready to meet the challenge head-on.
