Mattsson Targets More Goals After First for Norwich

Pelle Mattsson is eager to build on his scoring momentum after netting his first goal for Norwich City in a crucial 2-1 victory at The Valley.

Norwich City midfielder Pelle Mattsson is determined to build on his scoring momentum after netting his first goal for the club during a thrilling Championship match at The Valley. The Danish international made an immediate impact, firing a powerful shot from the edge of the penalty area just five minutes into the game. His early strike proved crucial in helping Philippe Clement's side secure a 2-1 victory, lifting them to 10th place in the league standings.

Since joining Norwich from Silkeborg in the Danish Superliga last summer, Mattsson has quickly endeared himself to the fans, showcasing his dynamic playing style across 26 appearances. After being sidelined for nearly two months due to an ankle injury sustained during a home win against Coventry City in late January, the 24-year-old is eager to assert his presence on the pitch and further contribute to his team's success. Reflecting on his inaugural goal for the Canaries, Mattsson expressed his joy, stating, “It was really nice, scoring my first goal for Norwich. I've been waiting a bit for it, so it was nice seeing the ball fly in. So, yes, it was nice and a good moment, a proud moment.” Read more about Marcondes Eyes Future as Norwich Contract Looms.

While he acknowledges that scoring isn't his primary strength, he remains committed to improving this aspect of his game. “I would like to score a few goals per season to contribute with that. But, yes, like you said, it's not my strong side, but it's something I can maybe develop in my game. But I'm in the team for being all over and trying to tackle stuff, passing the ball well and stuff. But it's nice seeing some goals,” he remarked. Mattsson also highlighted the importance of teamwork in achieving goal-scoring success, indicating, “It's really important that we're not only relying on our strikers, because they can play a good game although they're not scoring. So, yes, we need everybody to score goals. And it was nice seeing it was me today.”

Despite creating numerous opportunities to secure a more comfortable lead, Norwich had to maintain their focus in the latter stages of the match to clinch their 11th win in 15 games. Mattsson acknowledged the pressure during the final moments, saying, “Yes, you can say that. It was tough until the last second. But nice with the win, going into the national break, and we keep going.”

He added, “I think we had multiple chances throughout the game that we should have scored on. And when you don't take advantage of those chances, then it ends up being a bit scrappy in the end. So, yes, we should have scored on some of the chances. But in the end, it's the three points that matter.”

Commenting on the challenges presented by the Championship, Mattsson said, “It's the Championship. That's English football. That's how I learned it, the hard way. We were all just digging in, doing our best. In the end, three points, that's what matters.”

With his first goal now secured, Norwich City supporters will undoubtedly be keen to see how many more goals Mattsson can contribute as the team strives for a strong finish to the season.
