Emiliano Marcondes finds himself at a pivotal moment in his career as he navigates a diminishing role at Norwich City. The 31-year-old attacking midfielder has openly acknowledged that his time at Carrow Road is likely coming to an end, following a candid discussion with manager Philippe Clement about his future with the club.
At the start of the season, Marcondes enjoyed a consistent position in the starting line-up. However, recent weeks have seen him relegated to the sidelines as Clement's squad undergoes a significant transformation. In an interview with the Danish publication Tipsbladet, Marcondes reflected on how the team's dynamics shifted as the January transfer window approached.
"I started playing under him [Clement] right when he came in. I did okay too, and I scored and assisted," Marcondes shared, recalling his early contributions. However, he soon received a “pretty clear signal” regarding his waning role within the team. “They said they wouldn’t extend my contract in the summer. So they want to focus on the players they have now, and so I wouldn’t really be considered anymore," he added.
Marcondes indicated that Norwich City had encouraged him to explore opportunities with other clubs during the winter window. “I was also really close to getting away to a few different clubs that we talked to and had meetings with,” he stated. Despite several potential opportunities, a suitable move did not materialise. Read more about FA Investigates Thompson's Water Bottle Incident After Norwich Clash.
With only three months remaining on his contract, Marcondes is now eligible to engage in discussions with prospective teams. "I’ve tried to see where the clubs are and what they need," he remarked, highlighting his proactive approach in seeking a new opportunity.
Even with his reduced playing time, the former FC Midtjylland player remains ready for any call-up. “Now I’ve started to get into the squad a little more, because the window is closed and we’ve had some injuries," he explained. “He’s said that I’m not the first priority, but if they need me, they’ll use me.” However, with Norwich performing well in the Championship, Clement has yet to rely on Marcondes, opting for players who are likely to remain with the club beyond the summer.
As Marcondes approaches the milestone of 150 appearances in the Championship, he stands just three matches away from this achievement. Throughout his time at Norwich City, he has made a notable impact, contributing six goals and eight assists, solidifying his status as a valuable midfield asset.
Speculation regarding Marcondes' next destination is rife, with interest reportedly coming from clubs in Sweden, Norway, and the prospect of a move to Major League Soccer. However, any transition would necessitate the termination of his contract with Norwich, a decision that Marcondes and his representatives will need to consider carefully in the coming weeks.
