Jimmy Gilligan named Norwich academy chief
Norwich City have appointed Jimmy Gilligan as their new football development director, filling a key vacancy in the academy structure. Gilligan, 62, will take up the role on 1 September after leaving his position at UAE Pro League club Al-Jazira.
He succeeds Dean Rastrick, who left earlier this summer to join Everton. Gilligan was reportedly keen to return to the UK following his departure from Watford, where he previously worked.
The football development director oversees the player pathway, game model and technical standards across all youth levels, sitting above the age-group coaches and academy manager.
Gilligan’s coaching pedigree and impact on youth
Gilligan brings over 30 years of coaching experience, having held roles at Watford, Nottingham Forest, Wimbledon and Milton Keynes Dons. He also worked as an England scout under Stuart Pearce for the U21s and led the FA’s coach education programme.
He holds a UEFA Pro Licence, earned in 2019 alongside Steven Gerrard and Peter Schmeichel. From 2011, Gilligan spent three seasons managing the Nike Football Academy, where he helped develop players such as Tom Rogic and Seon-min Moon, who went on to senior international and World Cup football.
His reputation was further enhanced during his recent spell at Watford, where he raised academy technical standards and helped the youth team reach the FA Youth Cup semi-finals in 2024/25. He also played a key role in preparing defender Ryan Andrews for first-team football.
Ryan Garry reunion at Norwich
Ryan Garry, now a first-team coach at Norwich, was one of Gilligan’s former Nike Academy players. Garry told The Pink'un in 2025 that Gilligan had a “huge influence” on his coaching development.
The pair will work together again at Colney, with Garry acting as a link between Philippe Clement’s first-team coaching staff and the academy setup. Norwich will hope Gilligan can replicate his success in developing youth prospects into senior players.
Ben Knapper welcomes Gilligan’s expertise
Norwich’s Sporting Director Ben Knapper expressed his enthusiasm for the appointment, saying: “I’m delighted to welcome Jimmy to Norwich City. He is one of the most experienced youth developers in the country, and his knowledge and expertise of elite talent development will be invaluable for us.”
Knapper added: “Throughout his career, he has seen multiple cycles of top talent transition from Academy to senior football, and the reference points that he has as both a player and coach developer will be something that everyone in our environment can benefit from.”
“His impact on the careers of many elite players over the years has been huge, and I’m excited to work closely with him on the next phase of our academy journey.”
