Kovacevic Targets Third Clean Sheet as City Face Blades

Norwich City's Vladan Kovacevic aims for a third consecutive clean sheet against Sheffield United, stepping up in the absence of injured Daniel Grimshaw.

Norwich City’s first-choice goalkeeper, Vladan Kovacevic, has quickly established himself as a vital asset under manager Philippe Clement. As the 27-year-old gears up for a crucial Championship match against Sheffield United at Carrow Road, he aims to secure his third consecutive clean sheet, reflecting both his personal development and the progress of the club’s goalkeeping unit. Kovacevic’s debut season in English football has been a blend of highs and lows. His recent appearance in an FA Cup tie against Leeds United showcased his potential, stepping in for the injured Daniel Grimshaw at halftime. Despite the team suffering a 3-0 defeat, Kovacevic’s performance included several outstanding saves, highlighting his shot-stopping ability.

With Grimshaw sidelined due to a groin injury sustained during the Leeds match, Clement has placed his trust in Kovacevic to lead the goalkeeping contingent. The City manager has expressed his satisfaction with the overall progress of the four goalkeepers in his squad, praising coaches Declan Rudd and Ricardo Pereira for their contributions to their development.

“Clearly, in several ways, and I don’t want to go too much into detail, because other teams are also listening,” Clement stated. “But I think that everybody who’s been following Vlad from the beginning of the season until now sees clearly the evolution, and all praise also to Declan and Ricardo to guide that story and to make it better and better.” Read more about Forson's Return Boosts Norwich as Injury Woes Persist.

Clement further emphasised the collective improvement within the goalkeeping group, noting the quality of their training sessions: “I see every day the training that they’re doing with them, and that’s really good quality, the way they work with the goalkeepers, and the response of the goalkeepers is also really good.”

Grimshaw’s absence for the upcoming match against Sheffield United is a significant blow. Clement revealed that Grimshaw is still experiencing considerable swelling in his calf following the injury. “He wanted to continue, but the moment he stood up he could not walk anymore, so we had to make that change,” Clement explained. “Louie is the logical one to come in, and he has been doing really well in all the training. He’s totally ready for that. No problems.”

Reflecting on the lessons learned from the defeat against Leeds, Clement acknowledged the stark differences between the Championship and Premier League standards. “It’s different than with the Championship. You saw that at Leeds,” he noted. “In physicality, in power, in running capacity, running intensity. I think that was the major difference, and the other side is also ruthlessness. If you make mistakes, you pay much faster in the Premier League than in the Championship.”

Clement remains optimistic about bridging the gap between the two leagues. “I’m convinced one day we can fill that gap in a one-off game, but we want to do that over a longer period,” he affirmed, underscoring his commitment to building a competitive team capable of thriving at the highest level.

As Norwich City prepares for their midweek encounter, all eyes will be on Kovacevic and his ability to maintain his form in goal, with fans eager for a strong performance to ignite positive momentum in the league.
