Jakov Medic’s chaotic Utrecht debut
Jakov Medic’s first appearance for FC Utrecht ended in farce as the Eredivisie match against Go Ahead Eagles was abandoned due to crowd trouble. Medic came off the bench with Utrecht 3-0 down, but the game was already suspended after fireworks were thrown onto the pitch.
After play briefly resumed and Utrecht pulled a goal back through Dani de Wit, the match was halted again when plastic cups were thrown near the visitors’ goal. Referee Martin van den Kerkhof decided against restarting the game, with the remaining 30 minutes scheduled to be played behind closed doors on Tuesday.
Utrecht condemn fan behaviour after abandonment
FC Utrecht’s general manager Edo Keuning issued a strong statement condemning the actions of some home supporters. He said, “Throwing fireworks onto the pitch, in particular, is unacceptable and endangers players, staff, and supporters.”
Keuning added, “This has nothing to do with supporting FC Utrecht. Thousands of supporters supported the team in the right way. It is deeply regrettable that their evening, and that of the players and staff, ended in this way.”
The incident overshadowed what should have been a positive night for Utrecht and Medic, who had just joined on a season-long loan from Norwich City.
Medic reflects on new challenge at Utrecht
Medic, who turned 28 on Monday, spoke about his return to the Eredivisie and the passionate atmosphere he experienced during his previous spell at Ajax. “I played in Germany for five years and the stadiums and the fans are always on a top level but also here in the Eredivisie,” he said.
“I was at Utrecht once before with Ajax. I was on the bench that day but I remember the atmosphere was extremely loud. I am the type of player who feeds off that atmosphere.”
He added, “This is a new challenge. I didn’t play very much last season but that is behind me now. I play with a lot of passion and heart and I want to show that here to the FC Utrecht fans.”
Medic also revealed there were other clubs interested but his familiarity with the league and fans influenced his decision. According to The Pink'un, this loan marks a fresh start for the midfielder after limited game time last season.
