The return of Amankwah Forson from injury is a significant boost for Norwich City as they approach the final phase of the season. The Ghanaian midfielder made his long-awaited comeback during Sunday’s FA Cup match against Leeds, where he came on as a late substitute in a disappointing 3-0 defeat.
Forson’s journey back to fitness has been fraught with challenges. He previously demonstrated his potential with a standout performance against Coventry last season, playing a vital role in the team's pursuit of playoff success. However, a knee injury sidelined him for two months. This season began under less than ideal circumstances, as a hamstring injury sustained during the opening fixture against Millwall kept him off the pitch for an extended period. Forson managed to return under former manager Liam Manning, but yet another hamstring setback forced him back onto the treatment table. Under the management of Paul Clement, Forson was reintegrated into the squad and even scored in a memorable 3-1 victory at home against QPR. Unfortunately, his recent injury has hindered his progress once more. After resuming full training in mid-February, Forson’s recovery has been a slow but steady process. Clement has emphasised the importance of resilience within the squad, particularly in light of the team's ongoing injury concerns over the past few seasons. Currently, Norwich City faces the daunting challenge of managing the absence of 13 players due to injuries, making Forson’s return all the more timely. Despite this, Clement has indicated that further work is necessary before Forson can return to peak performance levels.
“Yes, but he needs to work hard to get to the good level,” Clement stated. “You saw also Paris (Maghoma) today; he needs to work to get to this level and to get more minutes. So, yeah, a lot of good lessons, I think, to keep everybody humble in the building.”
Clement also reflected on the team’s performance against Leeds, expressing that while the scoreline was harsh, it served as a crucial learning experience for the players. “In three months we cannot change everything, and that's not possible. I said before the game, it's a good test to see where we are. I think 3-0 is too hard a lesson for that, but for sure players felt at moments, I need to work hard to get to this level, so that's helpful for the coaching staff also.” Read more about McLean Targets 300th Appearance as Canaries Face Leeds.
As Norwich City aims to regain their momentum in the closing weeks of the season, Forson’s return could be pivotal, provided he can enhance his fitness and contribute effectively to the team's objectives.
