Ben Chrisene of Norwich City is relishing the opportunity to resume his football career after overcoming a challenging recovery from injury. The young defender has made his return to action following a nearly three-month absence due to a hamstring injury sustained during a 1-1 draw against Coventry City in September. This latest setback was particularly frustrating, coming on the heels of an ankle injury that had already limited his appearances in the previous season.
Since rejoining the squad, Chrisene has featured in seven consecutive matches, playing a significant role in the Canaries' resurgence under the guidance of new head coach Philippe Clement. The 21-year-old has quickly found his rhythm on the pitch, although he candidly acknowledges the difficulties he faced during his rehabilitation.
“It feels amazing and it feels a long time coming,” Chrisene remarked about his return. “It’s kind of all come quite quickly as well. I got my first few minutes against Sheffield United and I’d only trained two or three times prior, but I think the manager wanted us injured players to get up to speed quicker than usual.”
The psychological toll of a prolonged injury can be immense, and Chrisene has experienced this firsthand. “Physically and mentally it’s been tough. I think having an injury, any long-term injury, it’s tough, but at the same time I'm more motivated now to come back stronger and be better than I was before,” he reflected.
Last season, Chrisene’s ankle injury had already curtailed his participation, and the subsequent hamstring issue only heightened his frustration. “I want not to have injuries anymore and focus on the football, and be able to be a part of the squad this season,” he asserted.
Throughout his recovery, Chrisene has benefited from the unwavering support of his teammates and coaching staff. “It is hard to stay motivated, but I think the lads around me and the coaching staff have been unbelievable. We’ve got such a good group. When you’re injured, you’ve got lads coming in to check on you,” he noted. Read more about Roberts Joins Shanghai Shenhua as Coaching Chapter Begins.
As competition for the left-back position intensifies, particularly with the emergence of Lucien Mahovo, Chrisene's focus remains on securing regular playing time. “I want to just be able to play as many games as I can from a personal point of view,” he stated in an interview with the club’s official matchday programme. “Then from a team point of view, scout the situation we’re in and finish the season as positively as we can.”
Looking ahead, Chrisene acknowledges the vital role Norwich’s supporters play in the team's success. “We’ve just got to stay motivated, I think. That’s the main drive and I think it comes from the fans as well; if they get behind us, then it makes everything easy,” he said.
