Norwich Target Diallo as Metz Deal Nears Completion

Norwich City are closing in on the signing of Metz forward Papa Amadou Diallo, with club officials keen to finalise the deal within 48 hours.

Norwich City are on the verge of finalising the signing of Metz forward Papa Amadou Diallo, with club officials eager to complete the deal within the next two days. The 21-year-old striker’s absence from Metz’s pre-season training camp in Belgium has intensified speculation regarding his potential transfer from the French club.

While Championship rivals Watford have reportedly reached a £4.3 million agreement with Metz for Diallo, the player appears to favour a move to Carrow Road. Norwich find themselves in a strong position, needing only to secure a work permit for the Senegal international. The club currently holds two Elite Significant Contribution (ESC) slots, which should facilitate the transfer process, especially as Matej Jurasek and Mathias Kvistgaarden occupy the other two slots.

Diallo’s exclusion from Metz’s recent friendly against Red Star, where the team triumphed 4-0, further indicates that a departure could be imminent. Known for his versatility, he can operate effectively on either wing or through the centre. Diallo played a pivotal role in Metz’s promotion campaign last season, netting 11 goals in 28 Ligue 2 appearances, and he also brings valuable experience from Ligue 1.

Norwich’s pursuit of attacking reinforcements follows Borja Sainz’s £14.25 million transfer to Porto. The club has already made seven senior signings this summer to strengthen Liam Manning's squad, yet the need for additional attacking options remains evident.

In addition to Diallo, Norwich are actively seeking an experienced left-sided player capable of covering defensive roles. Reports suggest that discussions with a suitable candidate are already well underway.

Injury concerns have prompted the Canaries to look for further reinforcements, particularly with Lucien Mahovo set to miss the start of the season and Kenny McLean returning to England for further assessment of an ankle injury. Ben Chrisene has recently made his return to action against FC Volendam, but the club prioritises additional cover as the Championship season approaches.

Norwich had previously shown interest in veteran defender Aaron Cresswell, but the former West Ham full-back opted to sign with Championship rivals Stoke City instead.

Following a friendly against Zulte Waregem, Manning expressed optimism about potential new signings, stating, “I’m one of those until it is signed, sealed and delivered I don’t like being presumptuous on anything. So we’re working hard. Ben (Knapper) and Lee (Dunn) and the guys behind the scenes are doing a great job in terms of being proactive and pushing things and trying to add to what we’ve got already. Things are progressing, but there’s definitely nothing at the minute.”
