Norwich agree loan-to-buy for Bruno Alves
Norwich City have struck a loan-to-buy deal for Cruzeiro defender Bruno Alves, according to The Pink'un. The 20-year-old Brazilian youth international is set to become the Canaries’ first signing of the summer as they look to strengthen their defensive options ahead of the Championship campaign.
The agreement includes an initial loan period with an option to make the move permanent. Alves is expected to complete the formalities imminently and join Philippe Clement’s squad as a left-sided defensive option.
Bruno Alves chooses Norwich over European rivals
Reports from Brazil suggest Norwich have beaten competition from Dynamo Kyiv and Vitória de Guimarães to secure Alves’ signature. The defender has also been linked with Real Madrid over the past two seasons but has opted for the Canaries instead.
Despite not yet making a senior appearance for Cruzeiro, Alves has impressed at under-20 level and earned three caps for Brazil’s U20 side. Former Brazil manager Tite, who coached Cruzeiro until earlier this year, praised Alves, saying: "Bruno Alves is a great player. He will have a brilliant future. I spoke to him privately about what he can improve - I don't say that publicly - but he is a great player, and he knows it because I told him."
Alves to join Norwich’s South American contingent
Alves will become the fourth player to move directly from South America to Carrow Road, following Gabriel Sara, Marcelino Núñez and Pedro Lima. Norwich’s scouting network in the region remains active, with two professional scouts based there.
Player profile and potential
Primarily right-footed, Alves is comfortable playing on the left side of defence and is noted for his strong defensive fundamentals. He has won the U-20 Copa do Brasil with Cruzeiro’s youth team and featured in the 2025 U-20 World Cup for Brazil.
Norwich are banking on offering Alves the senior platform he has yet to receive at Cruzeiro, aiming to bolster their defensive depth with a promising young talent.
