Norwich City have bolstered their midfield with the signing of Danish midfielder Pelle Mattsson from Silkeborg. The 24-year-old has signed a three-year contract at Carrow Road, with the club retaining an option to extend his stay. The transfer fee is reported to be £2.7 million, with potential performance-related add-ons for Silkeborg amounting to an additional £300,000. Negotiations for Mattsson's transfer were lengthy, initially stalling as Norwich shifted their focus to Serbian midfielder Mirko Topic, who was signed from Famalicao. However, following the departure of Marcelino Núñez to local rivals Ipswich Town, Norwich resumed their pursuit of Mattsson and successfully reached an agreement with Silkeborg.
Mattsson, who will don the number seven shirt recently vacated by Borja Sainz, has been on Norwich's radar since the tenure of former head coach Johannes Hoff Thorup. His arrival is expected to enhance the physicality and depth of a midfield that has already welcomed permanent signings Topic and Jacob Wright, a former Manchester City loanee, earlier this summer.
Ben Knapper, Norwich’s sporting director, expressed his satisfaction with the acquisition, stating: “Pelle is someone we have followed for a considerable amount of time and we are delighted to finally bring him to the club. He will add great technical quality to our midfield and he possesses an extremely well-rounded profile, effective in all phases of the game. He has a lot of experience for his age and will also bring leadership qualities, communication, and personality to our group. He’s an intelligent player and someone that we feel will complement the rest of our squad in a really nice way. We’re all excited to work with him and we look forward to him playing an important role here going forwards.”
Upon finalising his transfer, Mattsson shared his enthusiasm for joining the Canaries, remarking: “When I first heard of the interest from Norwich, I was proud. It’s been a long time since the first interest and now we’re finally here, I’m just ready. I can’t wait to get going, stepping out onto that pitch and wearing the yellow jersey.”
With the EFL transfer window closing at 7pm on Monday night, there is optimism among Norwich supporters that Mattsson could be eligible to participate in the upcoming Championship fixture against Blackburn Rovers. His signing represents a significant enhancement to a squad eager to make a substantial impact this season.
