Marcondes Reflects on Norwich's Rollercoaster Season

Emi Marcondes opens up about his mixed season at Norwich City, discussing highs, lows, and the impact of managerial changes on his playing time.

Marcondes Reflects on Norwich City Journey

Fresh from his Norwich City exit, Emi Marcondes has spoken candidly about a season of highs, lows, and frustration at Carrow Road.

Signed on a free transfer in October 2024, the midfielder made an instant impact in Norfolk with 11 goal contributions in 33 appearances, prompting Norwich to exercise a one-year option in his contract.

However, amid changes in the dugout, Marcondes drifted to the fringes last season, making just 17 appearances. There was January interest in his services, and he admitted he came close to leaving, but nothing materialised.

Challenges Under Liam Manning's Leadership

In an interview with Talk Norwich City, Marcondes reflected on his time with the Canaries and a challenging spell under Liam Manning.

It was a bit strange because we knew we were a good team, but it just didn't really click on matchdays, he said. We probably felt a bit disconnected in how we were doing things at the time.

Players who had been there the season before maybe wanted to play a little more, and there were different ideas within the group. Some of the new players didn't quite fit that, and they wanted to play in a different way. I think there was a real disconnection in that.

Then when you start losing games, especially when you're young and haven't experienced it much, you can become nervous, you start overthinking, and you don't act as quickly. We were in a bad spiral with that.

Positive Shift with Philippe Clement

We got to a point where we talked as a squad and felt we needed a big change, a clearer direction. I think it was a good decision from the club to go in a new direction, Marcondes stated.

When Philippe Clement came in, it was very clear. He has a strong personality and a very clear way of doing things, and he demanded a lot more than before. Everything was aligned; this is how we do things, and if you don't do it, you don't play. That was probably the biggest change.

After spending Liam Manning's final three games as an unused substitute, Marcondes became integral following Clement's arrival, featuring in each of his first seven matches and opening the scoring in the Belgian's first win against QPR.

Although his last City outing came in early January against Stoke, Marcondes admitted he still holds a lot of respect for Clement. He can look quite scary sometimes when he's aggressive, with quite intense eyes. But he has a heartwarming personality. He laughs a lot, makes jokes, and he's very personable, explained the midfielder.
