Manning Urges Norwich City Fans: 'We’re Miles Away' from Promotion

Norwich City manager Liam Manning has warned supporters that the team is far from Championship promotion standards after a 1-1 draw with Stoke City. With just one win in six, the Canaries face a crucial week ahead.

Norwich City manager Liam Manning has offered a frank assessment of his team’s current standing, urging supporters to brace for a challenging journey as they pursue Championship promotion. Following a disappointing 1-1 draw against Stoke City, Manning voiced his concerns, stating that his squad is “miles away” from the standards required for competitive success. The Canaries took the lead in the first half with a precise strike from Jovon Makama, expertly set up by Jack Stacey. However, the momentum shifted dramatically when Stoke’s Sorba Thomas equalised shortly after, leading to sustained pressure from the home side, who had been in strong form leading into the match.

Norwich City has now recorded just one victory in their last six games across all competitions, heightening the pressure ahead of their next fixture—a crucial East Anglian derby against Ipswich. Before this highly anticipated clash, they will face promotion contenders West Brom at Carrow Road in a midweek encounter that could prove pivotal. In discussing the team's current trajectory, Manning remarked, “Where we're at in our journey, we've got a huge amount of work to do. We're miles away from where we need to be. Right now we have to suffer a little bit of pain, and in this period, it is how do we pick up points along the way?”

He emphasised the importance of building team cohesion, trust, and defensive solidity. “How do we build some strong foundations in the group in terms of the connections, the trust, being hard to beat... I thought we showed a much better level of intensity and aggression in the way we defended,” he explained.

Despite the challenges, Manning maintained a degree of optimism regarding the team's potential. “Let’s be clear, it’s a good point at a really difficult place against a side in a good spot when you look at their form and how they’ve been playing,” he stated. “But then the performance element, where you break the game down... I thought they were much better than us for the first 30 [minutes], but we got a bit of control, out of possession, and showed a bit more bravery to play forward.”

The encounter with Stoke highlighted several issues that Norwich has struggled with this season. While they managed to secure a point, they faced relentless pressure, recording only two shots in the second half compared to Stoke's 16—an indication of the urgent need for improvement in their attacking play.
