Norwich City manager Liam Manning has made it abundantly clear that only an "unbelievable" offer would lead the club to consider parting ways with striker Josh Sargent as the transfer deadline approaches. Sargent has been in exceptional form, netting six goals in his last five Championship matches, and his recent performance was pivotal in Norwich's 2-0 victory over Blackburn Rovers at Ewood Park.
During the summer transfer window, Sargent turned down an opportunity to join Bundesliga club Wolfsburg, and Manning remains optimistic that Norwich can fend off any late bids as the deadline looms on Monday at 7pm. "It would have to take something unbelievable for anything to be done," Manning remarked. "I would never want to throw some words out there that get held against me. So as it stands, there is nothing I am aware of. He showed at the final whistle how all-in he is on the club."
Manning praised Sargent's influence on the pitch, highlighting his intelligent movement and sharpness, which led to the penalty he successfully converted. "He produces such high-level actions. I gave him a bit of stick because, for me, he missed a couple of other really good chances, which for the standards I know he sets himself, he'll take in future," Manning added.
The manager also emphasised Sargent's leadership qualities, particularly in his partnership with midfielder Kenny McLean, which have been crucial for the squad's cohesion. "He epitomised everything. I think if you look at him and Kenny, the leadership that they're developing and showing and bringing to the team is really important. I'm delighted that Sarge has got off to such a good start. He's a constant handful. I think he's so intelligent with the positions he takes up, and he's so sharp over the first metres. He's the best nine at the level for me. We're delighted to have him here; long may that continue."
While Sargent's immediate future appears secure, other squad members face uncertainty. Players such as Shane Duffy and Anis Ben Slimane have attracted interest, particularly Duffy from Turkish clubs and within the Championship. Manning acknowledged the unpredictable nature of the transfer window, stating, "At the minute, there's nothing close I'm aware of. But again, I know how quickly things move in the window and the nature of it. We've spoken about that situation and we're still in that position. We'll have to see what the next two days looks like."
Midfielder Kenny McLean, who has recently returned from injury, is also under scrutiny, with speculation surrounding potential interest from Russell Martin's Rangers. Manning reiterated McLean's importance to the team, saying, "I've had some really good chats with Kenny and made it quite clear what I think of him and how I see him. He's a really important part of what we're trying to do here. He's not intimated anything. You see him; he's rushed himself back a little bit for the team."
As Norwich aims to maintain their momentum following a strong start to the season, the focus remains on retaining their core squad while navigating the final days of the transfer window.
