Liam Manning, the head coach of Norwich City, is urging winger Matej Jurasek to elevate his performance further, despite the young Czech's noticeable development since his transfer to the club. The 21-year-old, who joined Norwich for £5.8 million, has become a regular feature in the matchday squad this season, making five appearances under Manning after a subdued start that saw him play just twice following his arrival in February. Jurasek has begun to make his mark, notably providing his first assist for the team in a 3-1 defeat to Wrexham. However, Manning is keen for the young player to push his limits and enhance his contributions as an essential member of the Canaries. Read more about Norwich Stumble in Derby Defeat to Ipswich Town.
Reflecting on Jurasek's progress, Manning stated, "It's one of those, Matej came in and had terrific impact [against West Brom]. I think he's continually improving and getting better, and that's probably a little bit where we are with some of the lads. They need time, they need support, they need pushing and challenging. They'll only grow and get better."
Manning also reminisced about his initial impressions of Jurasek, recalling the winger's performance in the pre-season opener against Northampton. "From that to where he is now, how he looks physically, mentally, his intensity that he works at, is completely different," he remarked. "He looks like a new player, so he'll continue to grow and get better. I think he's had a really, really good impact."
The Norwich manager highlighted the importance of healthy competition within the squad, particularly with the rise of fellow young talent Oscar Schwartau, who has made a notable impact since being included in the starting line-up. "The challenge for Matej is what we've said about Oscar," Manning noted. "Matej has had to step up his game because Oscar's come in and performed."
Manning stressed the significance of fostering a nurturing environment for younger players, which is vital for their growth. "Part of my job is to be realistic with the group we've got and where we are," he explained. "I think the one natural thing with slightly younger players is that they'll be inconsistent. That's where our job as a staff is to support them, to challenge them, to push them, to coach and educate them."
The manager acknowledged the difficulties associated with integrating new players into the squad, especially regarding building confidence and maintaining a consistent rhythm. "That’d kill someone's confidence, and you're trying to build a bit of rhythm," he said. "But then also, with form and performances, results, there's also a level where there has to be accountability for the level you hit."
As Norwich City aims to solidify their standing in the league, Manning's expectations for Jurasek will be crucial in assisting the young winger to fulfil his potential and contribute significantly to the team's aspirations.
