Gibbs Targets Comeback as Norwich City Prepare for New Season

Liam Gibbs is determined to bounce back from injury setbacks as Norwich City gear up for the new season, aiming to reclaim his place in the squad.

As Norwich City gears up for the new season, midfielder Liam Gibbs is keen to put a challenging period behind him and embrace a fresh start. The 22-year-old has faced considerable hurdles in recent years, but he is resolute in his determination to seize the opportunity for a resurgence.

Gibbs’ journey over the last two years has been anything but straightforward. After a breakthrough season that hinted at his potential, he found himself sidelined for much of the previous campaign, managing just one Championship start in the opening match against Oxford United, which ended in a disappointing defeat. With the summer transfer window in full swing and fierce competition for midfield roles—especially with the anticipated £3.5 million signing of Mirko Topic—Gibbs is intent on reclaiming his place within the squad.

The young midfielder has committed to an extensive rehabilitation programme, aiming to return as a more resilient player. “It's been very detailed and very gradual increases,” Gibbs stated in an interview with The Pink'un. “So it's taken a long period of time, but that was something that I asked and pushed for. I feel like I wanted to really make sure I get myself right because I can't keep coming back in and getting injured. I was really wanting to focus on being available. I think that's the main thing for me, is make sure I'm available and then try and put the best version of myself forward.”

Gibbs emphasises the importance of a complete pre-season to enhance his fitness levels, asserting that this will enable him to accumulate more playing time. “If I can have a full pre-season, I think that's only going to help that and get the minutes in my legs. It will help me become a more robust player and be able to play more minutes,” he explained.

Having endured the mental and physical challenges associated with injuries, Gibbs approaches his return with a refreshed mindset. He understands that reclaiming his position in the first team will require patience. “I know I'm a fit player now, but I still feel like I'm recovering into becoming a regular starter, almost,” he noted. “I feel like step-by-step is the way I go and look just for the next game ahead and make sure I'm available for that. Availability is what I'm chasing.” Read more about Darling Targets Leadership Role After Norwich Return.

Reflecting on the difficulties of the past couple of years, Gibbs remarked, “To go from that to another injury back-to-back is really devastating.” However, he has found crucial support from both the club and his family during these challenging times. “It's definitely been tough, and I've been able to work through that. But I feel like I'm in a strong mental headspace now. Like I said, chasing availability, chasing keeping my body fit, keeping myself healthy and being the strongest, best version of myself to put forward to the new manager.”

As Norwich City embarks on their new campaign, Gibbs is ready to reclaim his role and contribute to the team's aspirations. With the Canaries relying on their youthful talent to rise to the occasion, Gibbs is focused on overcoming his injury struggles and becoming an integral part of the squad's success.
