Field Joins Norwich City on Loan as QPR Seek Midfield Depth

Sam Field has joined Norwich City on loan from QPR until the end of the 2025/26 season, seeking more playing time after limited appearances this term.

In a significant development during the January transfer window, Queens Park Rangers (QPR) have confirmed that midfielder Sam Field will join Norwich City on loan until the end of the 2025/26 season. This move comes after Field expressed a desire for increased playing time, having found himself on the bench more frequently in recent months.

The 27-year-old has been a vital player for QPR over the past five years, yet he has only made nine starts this season, underscoring the need for a more prominent role. While clubs such as Charlton and Derby County showed interest, Field was particularly drawn to Norwich City, especially under the management of Philippe Clement. QPR's chief executive, Christian Nourry, provided insight into the decision to facilitate the move, revealing that Field’s representatives approached the club late last year regarding his reduced game time. "In November, his camp very respectfully informed us that Sam was unhappy with the amount of playing time he was getting and asked that if an opportunity arose in January for him to get more minutes for the second half of the season elsewhere, then could we consider it?" Acknowledging Field's dedication and contributions to the club, Nourry stated, "Sam has been at the football club for half a decade, always respected the fans and the shirt, and therefore as a board we felt it was appropriate to grant this request. I wish him the best with Norwich ahead of us regrouping with him at the end of the season." Read more about Norwich Complete Loan Signing of QPR's Field on Deadline Day.

Field's departure raises questions about QPR's midfield depth, particularly following their recent 2-1 victory over Coventry City. However, manager Julien Stephen remains optimistic about his team's adaptability. "Sam is a top professional, nice guy, very good player. The first part of the season he didn’t play enough, so he wanted to have some more playing time. I understood, we (the club) understood. He had an opportunity, so I wish the best for the season," Stephen remarked in comments to the Hounslow Herald.

Stephen also highlighted the potential for younger players to step up in Field’s absence, framing this transition as part of a broader initiative to nurture talent within the squad. "When we lose experience like this, it’s an opportunity for other players to take the lead as well. It’s part of a project of the club to develop young players and to give them the opportunity to grow up and to take the lead."

As Sam Field embarks on this new chapter with Norwich City, he will be eager to make an impact and regain his form in a competitive environment. Meanwhile, QPR will look to harness the potential of their younger players as they navigate the challenges ahead.
