In a surprising turn of events, Andy Cook has stepped down as head coach of Norwich City Women, just two days after the team celebrated a thrilling promotion to the third tier of women’s football. This announcement follows a remarkable play-off victory against Moneyfields, where Norwich triumphed 6-5 in a dramatic penalty shoot-out after a 2-2 draw in regulation time at Burton’s Pirelli Stadium. Cook's departure, alongside that of his assistant Ethan Scott, leaves the club in search of a new coaching team as they prepare for their inaugural season in the FA Women’s National League Division One South East. This transition comes at a pivotal moment for the club, which is eager to build on its recent success and establish a strong presence in the new division.
Flo Allen, Norwich City’s head of women’s football, expressed her gratitude towards Cook in a statement on the club's official website. She acknowledged the clear objective set when he joined two seasons ago: achieving promotion to the third tier. “I have huge appreciation for the work that Andy has done to get us over the line in doing that,” she stated.
Despite the promotion, Allen noted that the decision to part ways was made after careful consideration of the club's future ambitions. “We have taken stock of what we believe is required to move our programme forward and to ensure that we not only sustain tier three status, but remain competitive on the pitch moving forward,” she added.
During Cook’s tenure, the team finished as runners-up in the FAWNL South East Division One in both seasons under his leadership. His coaching experience also includes a role at Newcastle United Women as a first-team coach, as well as a four-season stint as head coach at Nottingham Forest Women.
As Norwich City Women prepare for the challenges of the upcoming season, they reflect on a remarkable journey while gearing up for new leadership to guide them. Both Cook and Scott depart with the club’s heartfelt thanks and best wishes for their future endeavours. The search for their replacements is expected to commence shortly, with the aim of continuing the club's upward trajectory in women's football.
