Norwich City manager Philippe Clement is keenly awaiting updates on the fitness of Papa Amadou Diallo and Jovon Makama after their injury concerns cast a shadow over an otherwise promising 2-0 victory against Blackburn Rovers. While the win highlighted the team's resilience, the status of Diallo and Makama introduces an element of uncertainty.
Diallo was a last-minute withdrawal from the match, having been named in the starting line-up before being ruled out during the warm-up. His frustration was evident after he sustained an issue while participating in a shooting drill prior to kick-off. “Papa felt something with shooting towards goal in the warm-up. So that's also a weird one,” Clement explained. The manager had been particularly cautious with players returning from injury, ensuring that Diallo and others did not face undue strain. “This last week, we really took good care of all the players who had most minutes, and players coming back like Papa so that they didn't have a big week,” he added. Meanwhile, Makama's injury is now under closer examination by the club's medical staff. His situation became concerning after he landed awkwardly during the match, resulting in pain to his ankle and foot. “I saw the images. He was in a duel, he was running, and he stepped, instead of on the grass, on somebody's arm or hand that was lying there, and he has twisted his foot. It was very painful afterwards, so that he could not stand on it anymore,” Clement stated.
In Diallo's absence, Tony Springett stepped up, while substitutes such as Mohamed Toure, Oscar Schwartau, and Mathias Kvistgaarden made significant contributions, showcasing the squad's depth. “That’s why all the players in the team also feel they're close to playing games,” noted Clement. "They need to be involved in the story and show it every day in training.”
Clement further emphasised the importance of solidarity and determination among his players, regardless of their individual situations. “It doesn’t mean that they cannot make faults, for sure, but it’s about the reaction, what they do on the pitch, and the braveness to be there united together in whatever position to do the job for the team."
The collective effort displayed against Blackburn was vital, as Clement highlighted the need to maintain a positive mindset. “These games are really important, because this gives the team also the energy to know that, look, a lot of things can go wrong, but we as a group, we react. We as a group, keep a clean sheet. We as a group, scored two goals, and we need to continue with that mentality.”
As Norwich City gears up for their next match, the focus will remain on the medical updates concerning Diallo and Makama, with Clement hopeful for a swift recovery for both players.
