Birmingham City in Talks with Norwich City Over Grant Hanley Transfer

Birmingham City are reportedly in discussions with Norwich City regarding the potential transfer of defender Grant Hanley as they seek to strengthen their defence ahead of the transfer deadline.

Birmingham City have initiated discussions with Norwich City concerning the potential transfer of defender Grant Hanley, according to reports from Football Insider. As the transfer window approaches its conclusion, the League One leaders are eager to bolster their defensive options.

Norwich City appear amenable to the prospect of parting with Hanley before the transfer deadline on 3 February. The 33-year-old club captain has found himself sidelined this season, making only three appearances in the Championship. With Birmingham's management prioritising defensive reinforcements in their quest for automatic promotion, they face stiff competition from teams such as Wycombe and Wrexham.

Hanley’s current contract with Norwich extends until the end of the 2024-25 season, which could mark the end of his eight-year tenure at Carrow Road. This season, he has featured in just four matches, with only two of those as a starter. Nevertheless, Hanley remains a vital component of the Scotland national team, having participated in all six of their Nations League fixtures in the latter part of 2024.

With a wealth of experience at the Championship level, Hanley has made 295 appearances in the second tier, alongside 79 matches in the Premier League. The defender, originally from Dumfries, has enjoyed considerable success, winning three Championship titles with both Norwich and Newcastle.

Birmingham City are determined in their pursuit of promotion to the Championship, currently holding a slender one-point lead over second-placed Wycombe in League One. Under the stewardship of manager Chris Davies, the team is preparing to face Exeter City in their next fixture on Saturday, 18 January. The outcome of the negotiations regarding Hanley could have significant implications for Birmingham's defensive strategy as they continue their campaign.
