Tettey Takes Charge as Rosenborg Interim Manager

Alex Tettey has been appointed interim manager of Rosenborg, stepping into senior management for the first time as the club battles relegation in the Eliteserien.

Alex Tettey has been appointed interim manager of Rosenborg, marking a pivotal moment in his career as he steps into senior management for the first time. The former Norwich City midfielder takes charge at a critical time for the Norwegian club, which currently finds itself precariously positioned just above the relegation zone, having garnered only five points from their first seven matches in the Eliteserien. The decision to elevate Tettey follows a disappointing 3-0 defeat to Viking FK, which resulted in the dismissal of head coach Alfred Johansson after two and a half years in charge. Tettey, who has deep connections to Rosenborg, having both started and concluded his playing career there, retired in December 2021. He swiftly transitioned into the academy system, working closely with the Under-18 team alongside Roger Naustan. His expertise led to a role on the first-team coaching staff when Johansson was appointed from FC Copenhagen in December 2023.

As Tettey prepares to lead the team into their upcoming match against Lillestrøm SK next Sunday, he will be supported by Naustan and Geir Hansen. In a press conference following his appointment, Tettey reflected on Johansson's departure, stating, “It has been a tough day. There are very talented football coaches who are not with us now. Personally, I have learned a lot from Alfred through the good philosophy he has. I have learnt a lot from him and the team.”

When approached by the club’s board about taking on this crucial role, Tettey did not hesitate. He remarked, “I had no doubt about saying yes. It was a bit strange actually, but I wasn't (in any doubt). I am very humble about this task. Don't be fooled, because we are talking about Norway's biggest club. It's not just any job. There is a culture and job here that is very tough. At the same time, I also know what opportunities lie here.”

As he readies himself for a pivotal match on Sunday, Tettey underscored the need for unity among players and supporters. He stressed, “It is very important that we do not do this alone. We need support from everyone, especially those who are happy in Rosenborg. We need that support to lift ourselves; we are very ready to do that.”

Despite his experience as an assistant, Tettey remains focused on the immediate challenge, steering clear of speculation about a permanent appointment. “That is a tough question. Right now, my focus is on the game on Sunday. Apart from the game on Sunday, I don't have any other thoughts about it,” he stated.

Addressing his previous absence from away fixtures due to family commitments, Tettey light-heartedly quipped, “Just as players should be free, my wife has freed me,” which drew laughter from the audience.

Rosenborg chairwoman Gotaas Johnsen also commented on Tettey’s temporary appointment, indicating that discussions regarding a long-term managerial position have not yet occurred. “It has not been a topic. But nothing has been decided until something has been decided,” she noted.

Tettey, who enjoyed a nine-year spell at Norwich City after joining from Rennes in the summer of 2012, made 263 appearances for the club and played a pivotal role in three Championship promotions. As he embarks on this new chapter, the Rosenborg faithful will be hoping that Tettey can leverage his extensive experience to help steer the team back to form.
