Middlesbrough and Norwich battle for Balthazar Pierret
Middlesbrough and Norwich City are both interested in signing French midfielder Balthazar Pierret from Ligue 2 side Red Star FC ahead of the 2026-27 Championship season. According to Football League World, the 26-year-old has attracted attention from both clubs as they look to strengthen their midfield options.
Red Star reportedly value Pierret at around £500,000, with Middlesbrough having already made an initial offer of £300,000 plus a 10 per cent sell-on clause, which was rejected. Norwich head coach Philippe Clement is said to be actively involved in the pursuit, aiming to bolster his midfield ahead of the new campaign.
What Pierret offers in midfield for Norwich and Boro
Since joining Red Star from Serie A side Lecce in January, Pierret has made 14 appearances in Ligue 2, contributing one assist. His playing style is defensive-minded, with strong statistics in tackles and duels won, suggesting both Championship clubs see him as a holding midfielder.
Middlesbrough, having lost Hayden Hackney to Everton and seen Alan Browne return to Sunderland after his loan, clearly need reinforcements in midfield. Pierret could provide cover for Aidan Morris or allow Morris to play a more advanced role if signed.
For Norwich, adding a player like Pierret would strengthen the defensive midfield area, an area Philippe Clement may want to improve to push for promotion after finishing eight points outside the play-offs last season.
Work permit and eligibility concerns for Pierret
There are potential hurdles regarding Pierret’s eligibility for a work permit under current UK rules, which have tightened for players over 23. His limited appearances in Serie A-just three before moving back to France-may not meet the criteria for a Governing Body Endorsement or an Exceptional Talent visa slot.
If Pierret does secure the necessary paperwork, he could represent a low-cost, effective signing for either club. However, the work permit situation remains a key factor in whether a deal can be completed.
