McConville shines in Nations League
Ruairi McConville has emerged as a key figure in Northern Ireland’s Nations League campaign. The 21-year-old Norwich City midfielder played every minute in three of Northern Ireland’s four unbeaten games during the international period, contributing to three clean sheets.
His aerial presence was crucial, helping create goals in the 3-0 win over Ukraine and winning a penalty against Georgia, although Isaac Price missed the spot-kick. McConville’s man-of-the-match display in the 0-0 draw with Georgia in Belfast kept Michael O’Neill’s young squad top of their group.
O’Neill backs McConville’s rise
Michael O’Neill praised McConville’s performances and the team’s defensive structure. “It’s brilliant,” O’Neill said after the Ukraine game. “Right through the team, we’ve just really got something good at the moment, and we’re only going to get better.”
O’Neill highlighted the collective effort behind the defensive solidity, including analysis and tactical discipline. “We’re always looking to improve, we’re always trying to find perfection,” he added. “But in terms of defensive performances and people doing their jobs, being patient, knowing when to jump and put pressure on the ball and then being able to turn those opportunities into attacks as we did, it takes a lot of work.”
Young squad handling pressure well
McConville missed out on the World Cup after Northern Ireland lost a play-off to Italy, but O’Neill remains confident in his young players. “It’s good for the team to have expectation,” he said, quoted by The Pink'un. “In football the worst thing is to have no expectation so I think the team will handle that well.”
O’Neill acknowledged the challenges ahead but praised the emergence of players like Paddy Kelly, Tom Atcheson and McConville. “They’re probably a little bit quicker than maybe we thought, Tom Atcheson and Ruairi coming in and playing extremely well,” he said. “I think all round I’m pleased with where we are at this moment in time.”
