As the transfer window approaches its conclusion, Norwich City head coach Liam Manning has expressed satisfaction with his current squad while remaining open to the possibility of late additions. Following a busy summer that saw the arrival of 11 new players ahead of the Championship season, Manning is focused on developing a team capable of achieving promotion, exercising caution against hasty signings.
Norwich's recruitment strategy, spearheaded by sporting director Ben Knapper, has been notably proactive. High-profile signings such as Mirko Topic, Mathias Kvistgaarden, and Harry Darling have generated excitement among supporters, and Manning's early assessment of his squad reflects a positive outlook.
"We'll have to see how the rest of the window pans out," he stated. "I think we've done some really good early work, which I do believe we'll see the benefits of as we move forward."
Despite facing challenges, including a hamstring injury to Amankwah Forson during the season opener against Millwall, Manning is not rushing to the transfer market for a quick fix.
"No, we've got options," Manning asserted when asked if Forson’s absence required an immediate replacement. "I think you saw that the other night. Emi (Marcondes) was excellent, and Oscar (Schwartau) did really well, probably the best I've seen him since we've come in."
Manning expressed confidence in the depth of his attacking options, particularly the strong synergy between Marcondes, Schwartau, and Josh Sargent. He also holds high hopes for contributions from recent signings Kvistgaarden and Ante Crnac.
"I'm really pleased with what we got," he concluded, indicating a blend of existing talent and new arrivals that could propel Norwich towards their season goals.
In a further positive note, Manning highlighted the impact of Harry Darling, who has quickly become an essential player since reuniting with his former MK Dons teammate. The centre-back's maturity and leadership have left a strong impression on Manning, who acknowledged Darling's significant growth since their time together in League One.
"I worked with him at MK, but his levels have gone up a considerable amount since I last worked with him," Manning remarked. "You see his qualities on the ball, and I think positionally he's improved a lot in terms of the defensive side of the game."
Darling’s early performances reflect his dedication to Norwich’s culture, and Manning emphasised the importance of embracing the less glamorous aspects of football that contribute to success.
"Harry's been key in building that," Manning stated, underlining Darling's role in cultivating a positive atmosphere within the squad.
