Kvistgaarden's Surprise Recall to Denmark
Mathias Kvistgaarden's improved form for Norwich City has earned him an emergency recall to the injury-hit Danish squad for Sunday's Nations League game against Wales in Cardiff.
The 24-year-old striker, who has three goal contributions in his first five Championship appearances of the new campaign, will link up with Brian Riemer's squad after injuries to Brentford's Mikkel Damsgaard and Stuttgart's Nikolas Nartey.
Riemer Praises Kvistgaarden's Versatility
Kvistgaarden's only previous senior international cap came under Riemer, who has been in charge since October 2024. "Mathias has found his form again," said Riemer, speaking at his pre-match press call on Saturday.
"He has been getting a lot of playing time for his club recently, and he is used to the British style. He knows what will hit him if he comes on the pitch. He is a multifunctional player in the attack. I can use him widely; he has played that many times in Brøndby. He can also play as a 10, and he can easily play as a nine."
Danish Squad Faces Injury Challenges
Unfortunately, it is clear that Mikkel Damsgaard, along with Nikolas Nartey, will not be available for the match against Wales. Riemer noted, "What we thought was a blow turned out to be a more serious injury. Just before leaving for Wales, we found out that Mikkel could not play in Sunday's match."
He added, "It's always difficult when you lose a player so late in a game. And even two. Normally I would consider not calling up a player, but when we lose two, we had to do it."
Despite the setbacks, Riemer remains optimistic about the team's capabilities, stating, "Mikkel was only one player out of 11 on the field, and we still have many other fine players, so we have a more than effective team." For more details, visit The Pink'un.
