Holt Targets Success as Partick Thistle Women’s Manager

Gary Holt, a former Norwich City favourite, takes charge of Partick Thistle's women's team, eager to bring his coaching experience to the Scottish league.

Gary Holt, a cherished figure from his time at Norwich City, has been appointed as the manager of Partick Thistle's women's team. Known affectionately as 'Three Lungs' for his relentless work ethic during his playing days, this marks Holt's first permanent coaching role since departing Livingston in 2020.

Before this appointment, Holt had a brief stint as interim manager at Falkirk, followed by a position as sporting director. His new role at Partick Thistle aligns with his long-standing passion for women's football, and he is eager to apply his coaching experience in this new environment. “I want to be challenged. I want excitement. I want something that gets me up and gets the juices flowing - this opportunity has arisen, and I cannot wait to get started,” Holt stated, clearly enthusiastic about this pivotal moment in his career.

Reflecting on his transition from men's football to the women's game, Holt shared, “I've always had an interest in the women's game and thought, being from the men's game, can I bring my toolbag across to the women's game and get my messages across? Can I implement the styles I want to see and see if it works?"

Holt is acutely aware of the complexities that accompany such transitions. “No matter in football, it's usually someone losing their job so you can get one. It's the ugly side that we don't want to talk about. Once I spoke to the people and knew it was a real opportunity, I hope they can see my passion for what I want to implement,” he noted thoughtfully.

During his tenure at Norwich City, Holt became a fan favourite, playing a crucial role in the club’s success across various managerial eras. His contributions were instrumental in Norwich's promotion back to the Premier League via the play-offs after returning as a coach. Caroline Mackie, the chief executive officer of Partick Thistle women's team, expressed her confidence in Holt's ability to elevate the team. “We’re delighted to welcome Gary to the football club. His experience and coaching record speak for themselves. His enthusiasm to drive this club forward and develop players was clear to see from the very first conversation we had with him. We look forward to working and supporting him as much as we can as he leads the club forward,” she remarked.

As Holt embarks on this exciting new chapter in the Scottish Women's Premier League, the focus will be on how he implements his vision at Partick Thistle. With a blend of experience and passion, he is poised to offer a fresh perspective to the women's game, potentially transforming the team's fortunes in the league.
