Henderson Celebrates Milestone as Rochdale Return to League Two

Ian Henderson marks a career highlight as Rochdale secure promotion back to League Two, playing a key role in their thrilling play-off victory at Wembley.

Former Norwich City forward Ian Henderson is celebrating a remarkable achievement at the age of 41, as he revels in Rochdale's promotion back to the English Football League. The team secured their place in League Two following a thrilling play-off victory against Boreham Wood at Wembley Stadium.

Henderson, who has made over 500 appearances and scored 116 goals for Rochdale, played a pivotal role in the club's resurgence after a three-year absence from the EFL. Coming off the bench, he was instrumental in the team's dramatic comeback, helping Rochdale overturn a 2-0 deficit with just 13 minutes left in the match. The climax of the encounter was reached when Mani Dieseruvwe scored a header in the 97th minute, sending the match into extra time—a fitting tribute to a season marked by late-game heroics.

Hailing from Bury St Edmunds, Henderson’s football journey began at Norwich City, where he made 79 appearances and was part of the squad that achieved promotion to the Premier League under manager Nigel Worthington during the 2003/04 season. Despite injuries hampering his early career, Henderson has established a commendable reputation across the lower leagues, earning legendary status at Rochdale during two separate spells.

This latest promotion marks only the third time in his extensive career that Henderson has celebrated such success, having also played for clubs including Salford, Northampton, Luton, Rotherham, and Colchester United. As he approaches his 42nd birthday in January, discussions regarding a new contract are anticipated, with Henderson eager to continue contributing to Rochdale's efforts in League Two.

Reflecting on the season, Henderson stated, "I've been at the club for a very long time and we were in real treacherous times three years ago but now we're in a real stable condition and can sustain league football. There may be one more season. I'll have to wait and see. This is my third promotion in two decades; that's not a great ratio, but from where the club was three years ago, I'm so proud of everyone."

As he embarks on this new chapter, Henderson's story exemplifies perseverance and dedication in the face of adversity. His experience and leadership will be crucial as Rochdale aims to re-establish itself and make a significant impact in League Two once again.
