Callum Doyle, a standout player from Norwich City’s recent campaign, is reportedly on the verge of finalising a transfer to Championship rivals Wrexham, according to The Pink'un. The 21-year-old defender, who spent last season on loan at Carrow Road from Manchester City, is set to continue his footballing journey in the second tier of English football.
Doyle made a significant impact during his time at Norwich, quickly winning the affection of the fanbase. His contributions were vital, particularly in a challenging season that concluded with a 13th-place finish and a shaky defensive record. The young defender showcased his versatility by excelling in both left-back and centre-back roles, making 43 appearances and providing seven assists throughout the campaign. Despite his impressive performances, a permanent transfer back to Norwich was always seen as unlikely. Sporting director Ben Knapper reportedly ruled out the possibility of a long-term deal, citing financial constraints associated with acquiring the promising defender's services. With first-team opportunities at Manchester City limited, several Championship clubs have expressed interest in Doyle. However, Wrexham appears to be leading the race, with a reported fee of £8 million, including add-ons, on the table. Read more about Owls Target Hernandez as Financial Woes Persist.
Following their recent successes and the financial backing of Hollywood stars Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, Wrexham are keen to establish themselves in the Championship after achieving promotion from League One last season. The club has already invested over £20 million in new players and is eager to strengthen their squad further after defeats to Southampton and West Brom in their opening fixtures. At the end of his loan period, Doyle expressed his desire for a permanent move, stating, “I think [a permanent move] is the next aim for me. It's my fourth loan now, and I've been all over the country. I've got nothing bad to say about this club. I love it. I've loved playing here and at Carrow Road. The fans are great, so you never know [about a return]. It just depends on what happens in the summer, to be honest.” He added, “I think it's more of a family club than the ones that I've been to in the past. I settled in well. The lads greeted me and they were buzzing to have me. There's a great changing room there.”
As Doyle prepares to embark on this new chapter with Wrexham, Norwich City supporters will undoubtedly look back on his contributions with fondness, cherishing the hope that their paths may cross again in the future.
