Families have welcomed a new initiative aimed at tackling food poverty, organised by the official charity partner of Norwich City FC. The 'Play and Eat' project, held at the Community Sports Foundation's hub, The Nest, allows children and their families to enjoy a meal after school for just £2 each. This initiative runs during term time from 16:00 to 18:00 BST, Monday to Friday.
While the foundation states that the scheme is "open to all," it particularly targets those "struggling to cope with the ever-rising costs of feeding their children or providing a healthy, nutritious meal," according to a report by BBC. Ian Thornton, the foundation’s CEO, highlighted the dual benefits of the project, stating, "Not only will local families be able to enjoy a healthy, freshly cooked meal, the 'play' hour offers an invaluable opportunity to socialise, exercise and make new friends, all for a very reasonable price."
The project, which has been in operation for about a week, features meals such as vegetarian lasagne and mango and lime chicken, freshly cooked on-site. Children attending have expressed enthusiasm for the meals, with one stating: "[The food] is really good. It's like being in a five-star restaurant. I love it." Additionally, another child remarked, "I think it's really fun, and it's a great offer as you get loads of time to play football. It's a lot better than sitting in your room."
Parents have praised the programme for its "fantastic value for money," noting its positive impact on their mental health as it fosters community ties. They appreciate the opportunity for their children to enjoy nutritious meals while "letting off some steam" after school. Jackie Thornton, the foundation’s director of strategy and development, reported, "On Friday we had our highest number which was 34 people." She added, "I think once word gets out a little bit further, and people know they can access this service, I think we will see the project grow and grow."
Located near Norwich Airport, The Nest serves as a football-based community hub featuring 3G pitches, conference space, and an outdoor play area. The initiative was supported by a donation of £5,000 from the house building company, Persimmon Homes.
